The Movielife… Proto-Easy Core?

It turns out I may have been a fan of easycore long before I knew what it was.  I always dug Newfound Glory, who I considered a hardcore band back then.  Probably because Chad sang for Shai Hulud.  It was a lot of “melodic hardcore,” aka easycore, aka straight bitchin’.

Anyway, I heard the Movielife and I really liked them.  Bought a cd, copped a shirt, and generally basked in the vibe for a while.  I only ever really heard the one record “This Time Next Year,” and by time their next record came out, I was pretty much moving on to even more whiny Long Island metalcore with From Autumn to Ashes, which is probably a whole other post.  Anyway, that one Movielife record still kinda rocks, and it really seems like a building block for easycore.

I saw their singer at a pizza place in Long Island and he had a smoking hot scene girl with him.  Easycore dudes get it done.

The dudes in the band went on to play in other bands, such as I am the Avalanche and Nightmare of You.  Good for them, I guess.

I feel like most easycore bands are probably one record away from singing about “knowing their roots,” and I think that the Movielife should be among said roots.

nahhh. i would hope that bands influenced by the movielife are far more likely to stay away from the “easycore” side of things. mixing hardcore with pop punk doesn’t need to be tactless. the movielife had tact.

Yes, totally agree that TML were ancestors of easycore. Saw them in 98 or so, there were about 10-15 people there I think?

That said, they are one of those bands who I always thought were very mediocre/unremarkable that has apparently developed some kind of cult fanbase. Then again, I also think Converge, Cave In, and Lifetime are dull, unremarkable bands, much to the butthurt raging of the typical Absolute Punk poster.

more so than nfg? they made the shirt and they put in more chuggalong breakdowns?

i don’t think anyone could out-easycore NFG, but the Movielife were doing the damn thing around the same time and they always kind of seemed similar to me, except for the fact that NFG shows were a Big Deal, and the Movielife kind of played shitty venues in Jersey and Long Island.

You’re right about the definite emo twinge. I can’t argue that. But they were on revelation and it felt right.

haha, okay okay. i just thought the post seemed to be claiming some sort wonderful revelation. when really, who on earth couldn’t make a connection between ttny and pop punk with breakdowns?

I still listen to the “Has a Gambling Problem” EP more than almost anything else in this genre- including NFG.

the movielife are one of the few bands from my youth who i’d wish would reunite. i got my wish but have to subject myself to the crowd and other bands at bamboozle. not worth it IMO

Movielife are still probably one of my favorites, I miss them. One part of 10 seconds too late sounds like he’s saying “you turned away to shave your face but you know you’re a bear”

Also, from autumn to ashes = from average to awful

do you guys remember that band daggermouth? a recent band that played hardcore shows and only the youngest kids would watch them because they were gay and poppy. the type of band that would be really popular in fresno but couldn’t get a show in SF. hella easycore. very heavy movielife influence, i’m sure they would probably cop to it. i’m not sure what makes the movielife “proto-easycore” cause i feel like the sound was already pretty developed by this point via saves the day / get up kids.
