As of lately, a couple of my friends have been trying to get me into this band called Defeater.
From the sound of the name, I thought they’d be some bad-ass ignorant mosh shit like Trapped Under Ice, but nope. The other day I pulled them up on Jewtube and saw this.
WTF right? I was like, is this a joke?
so I pull up a few more songs, and to my luck they aren’t long acoustic snooze-fests.
Instead, it’s a long hardcore snooze-fest. That’s a little better. So yeah, It’s ok I guess. I can’t really see myself moshing to it, but so far I wasn’t really impressed. Then I saw their Wikipedia article and read this, “Defeater’s body of work is conceptual. The lyrics of each release contribute to a larger story, which concerns the hardships and internal conflict faced by a working-class family living on the Jersey Shore during the post-WWII period.”
I thought, “wow. That’s sounds boring/beta/homosexual”. Then it got me wondering, why focus on Jersey Shore during the “post-wwII period”? I’m pretty sure nothing happened back then at all. They should focus on the modern Jersey Shore! Lettuce be cereal, THAT is what sells.
I figured these guys needed some snooki in their album
Instead of writing pretentious lyrics about boring crap no one cares about, they could write about tanning, clubbing, and pulling bitches! MAYBE then I’d give their boring garbage another listen.
Sorry Defeater. You need to loosen up and not be so serious. Until then I’ll have to pass. But what’s your opinion of Defeater? Do you legitimately like them? Or are they only good when you can’t sleep and you’re out of Ambien?

Nah I really can’t get into this whole style. When it comes to music I’m a meathead that just wants something heavy, catchy, or both. I don’t even pay attention to lyrics much unless it’s something yelled before a breakdown.

I have spent a good deal of time reading their lyrics. It’s on par with some great works of literature out there, just in a way different format. I am not joking. It’s really easy to get sucked into the characters and emotions. If your not into that, it’s cool. But “pretentious”? Wtf do you mean? Cowardice was supposed to be depressing. Like maybe a hardcore version of DSBM, at least that’s how I saw it.
Their acoustic songs are from an EP called “Dear Father”. Or the reverse side of their new record.
Tl;dr, if you even care, the first album is about a bastard who kills his father, runs away from home, returns to find out that his addict mother is dead, his brother tries to kill him but he kills his brother back. Then he an heroes. Their “Red white and Blues” EP is a tangent off of a character that the guy from the first album meets. African American WW2 veteran who sees bad shit and comes back home to physiological problems. Second and album is from the perspective of the brother.

Comadre, Defeater, La Dispute, Touché Amore, Loma Prieta, Converge, Shai Hulud, Cult Ritual all are superior to most stuff thats posted here (old saosin, circa survive, old chiodos, thursday, blood bros and dance gavin dance are ON PAR with bands like Defeater).
old bmth is terrible, and the best band to have a good time mosh is definetely Comadre and the best to sing-a-long, is pretty obvious that bands like the ones that this blog favors are not in the same league stuff like blood on the dancefloor and such are for the birds, Seargent D and his internet posse just enjoy pissing of the kids, and the kids get pissed off because they are bands they genuenly care about and love, and the kids are probably into DIY scene and love getting involved and thats really awesome and respectable and cool in my honest opinion, so when they read this blog the get deeply offended, but they fail because they forget this is the internet and this is a comedy blog not a serious music journalism blog.

I like Defeater because their songs paint imagery in my head and I like this style of music. You can feel the emotions of the lyrics. You said you don’t really care about lyrics so I see why you wouldn’t like Defeater since it’s an equal balance between music, imagery, and emotions.
They’d probably have more fans if they made songs about Jersey Shore though, that’s for sure.
I’m going to see them on Saturday. I’m not sure what makes them hipster. Writing songs about the post WW2 era is hipster? Really?

Defeater is my favorite band, followed closely by Trapped Under Ice at number 2. Fuck wit it. These dudes are simply putting a new spin on hardcore, which is more melodic, but it has a lot of substance. You can write it off as hipstery, but if you read the lyrics while listening to the albums all the way through, it’s pretty impressive. Also, if Defeater’s albums were combined into a movie it would fuckin rule.. Jus sayin
