I was wrong about PARKWAY DRIVE

A while ago I asked the question, “Why is Parkway Drive popular??” Here’s the gist of it:

Just caught the new video for “Karma,” which is pretty cool because it’s them playing on a beach (instead of a grassy field or desert, as seen in 90% of other metalcore videos). The video is sweet, but I guess I don’t see or hear anything that is any different from the 9 zillion other metalcore bands out there who sound like a less talented version of KSE, ALID, etc. Of course, a hot singer can more than make up for mediocre music, but this guy doesn’t look like anything special to me (no homo).

About 20 people told me if I watched their DVD, I would get it. And you know what? They were right!

Official DVD trailer: You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll mosh! And you can watch the whole thing on Youtube here.

I watched the whole DVD, and I have to admit that it converted me into a Parkway Drive fan. I’ve met/interviewed/hung out with the majority of the currently popular metalcore bands, and for the most part they are self-centered little douchebags who wish they were rockstars, so I definitely appreciate that Parkway Drive seem a lot like people I would have been friends with in high school– very chill, laid back dudes who just want to bring the mosh and have some fun.

Also, I’m not one of these “Mr. Old School” types who gets butthurt when younger kids don’t know about every obscure old hardcore band, but I will admit that I’m slightly bummed that most current metalcore bands literally know nothing about real punk or hardcore. For example, I would be pretty shocked if anybody in Asking Alexandria or We Came As Romans knew a single Black Flag song. Again, I’m not hating on them for it, but it’s a little funny that they are considered metalcore when they don’t really know anything about either metal or hardcore, but whatever.

With that in mind, I thought it was pretty cool that the Parkway dudes worship Bad Religion, a band who started years before any of them were even born. I guess it says something that my standards for punk rock credibility have sunk so low that being a Bad Religion fan enough to get a pat on the back from me :/

Also seen the singer reppin’ Strife and Biohazard on separate occasions in Kerrang. God bless those beautiful bastards.

  3. Dope says:

their first two cds were a lot better than what Karma was off of. I think it was the lack of adam d’s opinion (since he wasn’t producing it) that caused sleepwalkers to be mediocre

I have a theory that modern metalcore isn’t really metalcore, it’s more guys who grew up on Linkin Park and Korn then got into Killswitch and BFMV. Metalcore=mnstrm kids.

you’re a fucking dickhead mate, there’s nothing more to it.

all you scene kids are so hung up on who can or can’t be considered a hardcore band or a metal band that you’ve completely lost the plot. a band like parkway drive make music they like, which is a combination of different music genres, they’re not out to seek the approval of a “metalcore” tag from a bunch of stupid misinformed juvenile cunts.
if you don’t like parkway drive, don’t listen to them, it’s a pretty straight forward concept.
don’t sit on the internet writing off an insanely talented band when realistically you’ve got a better chance of pissing on the moon than ever creating anything anywhere near the musical joy that they create.
they’re mellow dudes, really nice and really down to earth. as far as the straight edge thing goes, each to their own, i’m not personally straight edge but i don’t at all judge people who are, half my mates are, it’s a lifestyle choice they choose, and at the end of the day they’re better off for it. in terms of straight edge being synonymous with hardcore, don’t complain about it, it’s scene kids like half the stupid fuckers posting on this story that build up hype over some stupid concept or item of clothing in an attempt to make the music they listen to more of an exclusive cult than a nice community of awesome people listening to killer music.

parkway drive are musical genius’s, either swallow that or fuck off

    • C.N. says:

      U a detective bro?

      • xFredSavagecorex says:

        “parkway drive are musical genius’s”

I think Parkway would personally cringe at the statement.
The reality is they are just chilled old Hardcore bros playing fun
        Metalcore. Nothing more, nothing less.
