There are few things more entertaining to me than laughing at Europeans who try to act like American thugcore bands (see my earlier post, “Can foreigners play thugcore?“), but I’ve seen so much that it takes a lot to impress me. It takes more than a Belgian guy mean mugging for the camera in a 25 Ta Life basketball jersey to make me laugh (although that is still pretty funny, now that I think about it), so believe me when I tell you that France’s RISE OF THE NORTHSTAR set the bar for lulzy foreigner-core so high that I can’t imagine anyone ever surpassing them!
In this video, a French guy wearing a Suicidal Tendencies-style flipped up hat is rapping Wu-Tang lyrics over NYHC breakdown riffs in the locker room of a baseball stadium, with Japanese subtitles for everything. Also, the guitarist is wearing a surgical mask like a paranoid Chinese lady waiting for the bus. And if that wasn’t enough for you, there’s even a nod to nu-metal at 3:23 when he says “BOUNCE! BOUNCE!” and they show a closeup of the singer’s baseball batting gloves.
It’s truly dizzying- if the concept for this video was “make superficial references to as many subcultures as possible, and combine them in a baffling, ridiculous way that makes it glaringly obvious that we don’t understand any of them,” then I give it a standing ovation. And lulziness aside, the song actually goes pretty hard- viva la France!

when exactly did rapping become such a widespread and acceptable part of da core?? i remember biohazard doing this way back in the day, and thinking it was kinda weird. i remember rage against the machine, limp bizkit and other bands we totally laughed at but kinda liked but still didn’t consider real hc doing making it popular. when did this go from being ‘novelty’, ‘crossover’ or ‘not hc’ to being ‘a thing’? do i have an exaggerated impression of how much of a ‘thing’ it is thanks to how much attention bands like winds of plague are getting?
please don’t mistake me as preoccupied with enforcing genre boundaries, i’m really just curious!

I am with you, I don’t get where/when this whole rapping hardcore thing became acceptable. But the best I can tell (thank you Stuff you Will Hate) the Euros are WAY more into this style of thugcore/HC than us American’s. Regardless, the video/band is fucking hilarious. It’s so lulzy I have a hard time believing it’s real.
Also, E. Town Concrete will never serve as an acceptable response to anything related to good music.
