Do you remember SAOSIN??

IMO the worst thing possible for a band is to be original. There’s nothing worse than being ahead of your time, because you do all the hard work of establishing something new and exciting, only to see other bands come along and make a lot of money off of copying your idea (usually after your band broke up because you were sick of being poor). There are very few better examples of this than the band who more or less created the blueprint for all of today’s post-hardcore: SAOSIN.

I’m not saying they were the very first band on the planet to do this, but I do think they were among the first to get it right, and they did it better than almost everyone else. Lulzy haircuts and stuff aside, it’s kind of amazing how relevant the Saosin EP is today, 8 years or so after these songs were written. Whether we are talking about Pierce The Veil, Sleeping With Sirens, or Emarosa, I really don’t feel like it’s an exaggeration to say that the entire genre of post-hardcore can be summed up as “bands who try to sound like Anthony Green-era Saosin.”

Which brings me to the topic of Anthony Green. We are hardly BFFs, but I’ve known Anthony for quite a while, and he is an awesome dude. The first time I met him was in 2004 or so when Circa Survive was staying with us. They rolled in at about 10:00 AM, and I had been up all night, but as soon as I met Anthony I knew he would be down to rage. Around 10:30 or so I was like “So… wanna go to the bar?” and it was on. For a 125 lbs manlet who plays acoustic songs and sounds like a girl, he is a solid bro and backed hard by SYWH.

Youtube comments = neverending source of SYWH material

Anthony is one of those guys who really makes a band, and I think it’s hilarious that Saosin even bothers to keep playing without him. Remember in 2005/2006 when Saosin was blowing up and it seemed like they were about to be The Next Big Thing? Compare to today, when nobody gives a shit about Saosin even though they are apparently still together. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY EXPLAIN THIS SHOCKING DISPARITY??

What do you think of Saosin?? Do they get the credit they deserve for being such pioneers of post-hardcore??? Does this post take you back to the era of Myspace, boot cut jeans, and 18 Visions? Did u ever hotbox in a Scion while blasting their EP???

  1. Thursday and Grade did it before (u can stretch and say atdi and glassjaw too, but thats just too much), but Saosin was totally the blueprint for the bands to come, the drum fills and the vocals were awesome on Translating The Name they should re-release it on vinyl or something they would make lot of money.

Circa Survive and his Solo Stuff is also very good.

  2. Isaac says:

I saw them at Projekt Revolution 2007 lol. Good shit.

  3. Save Parker says:

Love Circa Survive, one of my favorite bands, but can’t get into anything Saosin related, even with Anthony Green. They might get some credit for establishing that style pretty early, but I don’t think anyone is gonna make cash copying their newer stuff.

  4. Hughycash says:

Haha totally rediscovered this ep two weeks ago in the glove box of my friends daewoo that he lent me cause he lost his license for DWI. Not quite hot boxing a Scion but close enough me thinks.

  5. XIAMDOOMX says:

Translating The Name still gets regular play to this day. I saw them twice, once with anthony (amazing live), and once with the new doucher (showcase theatre last show, rip) and they blew without anthony.

  6. Brah says:

This is supposed to be different from all the screamo stuff that came out ’02-’05 how? What does “post-hardcore” actually mean? This whole style is softer than baby thighs son.

  7. Tom says:

i thought that the self titled album was pretty good. but then they watered it all down on the last album and i stopped giving a shit.

  8. Sam gore says:

New Saosin demo with Tilian Pearson is pretty good too.

  9. King Krakken says:

nobody gives a shit about Saosin
Lol – so true. Maybe in 10 more years they will be tr00 crucial heroes?

Honestly I heard/saw so many bands ’06 – ’09 that were taking this sound… being first sucks.

  10. him says:

No-one give a fuck. Their album is filling the bargain bin where I work.

  11. Kenzi says:

I own their self-title, but that’s it. The only time I ever listen to them is when I’m in the car and their songs come up on shuffle.

  12. jondabudz says:

This ep reminds me of being in 10th grade. Classic shit. Makes me feel like jamming Juturna.

  13. mcsquishytooshy says:

In Search of Solid Ground is a fucking great album, buuuuuuuut *I* was busy listening to Unleash The Carnivore.

  14. Mustard Tiger says:

I have hot boxed in a scion listening to their ep. Im actually going to see anthony on friday and its gonna be dope like always. IMO they perched on stilts has some of the most subtle yet intricate drumming I have ever heard during the verses. I can listen to that ep anytime anywhere.

  15. anon says:

wait wait. since when did this sort of thing become a “new style” called “post hardcore”? this really isnt that different for my money from thursday or most other lulzy 3rd wave “screamo”

  16. Mustard Tiger says:

I want an example of a thursday song that is remotely similar to a saosin song. Thursday has and will always sound like a 9th graders band.

  17. ob says:

I gotta agree that this just a more musically talented Thursday and not some epic groundbreaking shit. However I would buy a vinyl re-issue of this EP.

It was interesting to find out Green was in Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer as well.

  18. XIAMDOOMX says:

Wait wait, some one said they got a new singer…if this doucher is better than the last doucher…and if their sound goes back to what they used to sound like…i may give them a chance.

  19. Mustard Tiger says:

New singer is dude from tides of man, their album dream home is pretty good, dude can sing.

  20. MetalStew says:

    Love the EP.
Remember not getting into it until I met this Canadian chick in Mexico and she was all about it.
Haha, I’m pretty sure everyone has the most high school stories behind hearing this EP.

“Bury Your Head” is still their best imo.

  21. Anonymous says:

Fugazi is the pioneer of post-hardcore you dingus.

  22. shredenbacher says:

Woah, weird. Like last week I listened to Seven Years for the first in like 3 years and thought to myself “Does anyone give a shit about Saosin anymore?” then I came up with a rant in my head about Saosin was only good with Anthony blahblahblah.

  23. Mustard Tiger says:

Fugazi pioneered boring pretentious bull shit

  24. ohfosho says:

anthony told me that new saosin was the best it has ever been, their new singer is the best they’ve ever had….i felt pretty bad telling him that i would have to call him a liar after i finally listened to it since nothing they’ve done since is even close to TTN EP, and to people thinking they wouldn’t be able to sell that on vinyl, you’d probably be able to easily sell 2000 copies, even at 10 a piece thats good money
