There’s nothing white people love more than getting tattoos in someone else’s language. It always used to be Chinese/Japanese characters (“It means ‘PRIDE’ in Japanese, I got it to the day my cousin died”), but now that more and more white people are jocking Mexicans, Spanish is the most common option. Maybe they feel like the margin for error is smaller since they took two years of Spanish in high school and they really like Chipotle, but as you can see from this CROWD DETERRENT video, the potential for self-clowning is always there. From the Youtube comments:

i got a tattoo in japanese but the diff is i speak japanese. i love seeing people coming into my work with tats that say cow instead of live. saw someone who had 太 tattooed which means fat not sure what she wanted but i hazard to guess fat wast what she wanted.

I’ve been guilty of this for years, my first tattoo I got in a trailer park in Ashville, NC 8 years ago (see: pre google translate) and was in some sort of weird Spanish translation. I went to the Yucatan three days later and was pretty much laughed off the Peninsula. Since then I’ve managed to amass several more hispanic tattoos (pretty ironic being a white australian but im down for the lolz). But hey “I just really like the imagery”. Awesome post as usual
