Once upon a time, the deathcore scene was a very small group of bands who were made up of kids who liked hardcore and death metal pretty much equally. It was for dirty, weird kids who didn’t give a fuck and you definitely weren’t getting laid playing that style– a far cry from today, where the formula is something like:
- Get sick gauges/sleeves at 19
- Copy Suicidechapel riffs
- ???
- Get laid/profit
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on current deathcore or being an oldfag who is lamenting about how THINGS WERE SO MUCH BETTER BACK IN 2002, I’m just saying it was very different at that time. And actually, I think most of the bands from that scene didn’t age very well and that shit sucks when you listen to it today. But there is one band who IMO stood the test of time but sadly doesn’t get a lot of love: ANIMOSITY.
Their early stuff is a little too unpolished for me, but even still is solid. You have to give them some serious dap for being essentially a DIY hardcore band who sounded like Dying Fetus back when almost zero hardcore kids knew anything about death metal.
They didn’t get REALLY good until “Animal” IMO, which is a sick record. It’s technical and brutal, but still really catchy. Also, sick drumming without ever overplaying or getting into phaggy, prog territory. I wish more current deathcore bands would start ripping this album off!
Is this the original “party deathcore” video?? The best part? No fucking girls!! I mean I am all about hot sluts but there’s a time for just getting wasted and moshing with your bros, you know? Nobody wants girls around to ruin the fun. Oh and the bassist is wearing an Odious Mortem shirt– mirin.
U moshing??? Does anyone know who this band is in 2k11, other than grose metal nerds?? Why didn’t they ever get the recognition they deserved?? Ahead of their time, too ugly, or both?

I actually never heard these guys until just recently but any deathcore kid who’s done his research should know who they were, I mean they had Evan Brewer (The Faceless), Chase Fraser (Decrepit Birth), Navene Koperweis – (Animals as Leaders and Fleshwrought) and Dan Kenny (Suicide Silence)
Back when they were active they were just another band but if they formed today they’d be the biggest supergroup out and we would never hear the end of it from the legions of core kids.
+over9000
+1
Evan Brewer is just too damn good.
had no idea so many of these brahs went on to those bands! wow
It does make me laugh how this band I remember as kinda also-rans beside Suicide Silence and Carnifex and JFAC and the like are now massively in-demand technical players.
Holy shit I love Animosity so much. Was wondering if you were ever gonna write about em. I actually do kinda rip off Animosity when I write my riffs. These guys and Despised Icon were the high point of the whole deathcore scene for me. I like how Navene, the drummer, now plays in Animals as Leaders.
I fucking love this band, Navene shreds all over the drums in every song. They used to play here alot. I got to see them live 4 times before they broke up, their shows were always brutal as fuck. A lot of fights were started in the pit during Animosity. I miss these dudes ha
Heard “Fake Blood” by these dudes a couple of years ago. Really dug it, but for some reason I never got around to checkin’ out moar of their material. Think I’ll do that nao.
Good band, saw them once before they broke up. They might not have been very popular compared to Suicide Silence and stuff like that, but unlike most of the deathcore today they were popular among both hardcore- and metal-nerds.
I think this band could make some fast cash if they do a reunion tour in some years, but their frontman seriously needs to get under the needle and have his ears streched if they wanna go pro.
He has big gauges I thought?
no he has some big dangling earrings…

I love this band, animal is one of my top played metal albums
These guys were so close to being a big deal, they had gold foil merch out and everything, Definitely one of the few bands I hold up as being genuinely talented in a scene I really didn’t give a fuck about. Every time some kid tells you every band full of 16/17 year olds sounds like shit just play Animosity.
Check out CHON. Their members were 12-16 years old when they recorded their demo. Needless to say, it shreds.
THIS. FUCKING. BAND. No joke, there was so much talent in this…I’d put them up there with 18v as bands that were ahead of their time. Everything they’ve written still holds up today and is still better than 99% of what is released in this genre.
I still rock that california love/tupac tshirt they had and one of my buddies has one of those ‘custom’ animosity bowls they used to sell. haha
also…chase fraser with The Taste of Blood…that band was also epic as fuck.
the taste of blood, sons of aurelius and now DECREPIT BIRTH. dude is fucking talented. he told me though he never wrote for animosity it was navene and franks band. and leo wrote all the lyrics. oh well.
Chase is a fucking amazing guitarist. One time I saw Animosty play, his grandma was in the crowd watching and he came and hugged her after his set. Was the cutest thing I’ve ever fucking seen.
iv got that epic ass wizard shirt they made
I pre much stopped being a grose IMN coz of these guys..
backed
Fuck yeah i dont really admit liking deathcore but i defz mention animosity as one i do
The only band I’ll bother listening to when it comes to ‘deathcore’. These guys are awesome!
is “the red chord” deathcore. I cant fucking define them. also love how guy talked shit on suicide silence fans being wiggers with there caps saying OH YEAH THIS IS MY SHIT.
Yeah, I’d consider Red Chord early Deathcore.
+1
tech deathcore
i’d have to agree that this animosity and the red chord were the first actually non sucky “deathcore” bands, that dont get the respect they deserve. I could also say that Embrace The End goes into this category too, except they were kinda more towards the swedish death metal sound than straight up death metal
Animosity is still “the shit”, werent they like 16 on the first album also? considering how young they were back then, some srsly gifted musicians. I never got into the bands they formed after their break up
It’s amazing when you think about how the “deathcore” genre went from this to the “hey i listened to meshuggah and iwanna play generic djentcore” shit. And cause im also a oldfag, i srsly cant listen to the metalcore/deathcore genre anymore cause id rather listen to ignorant mosh and hardcore. At least they dont all sound like cheap Meshuggah clones with slower tempo, crappier riffs and lots of breakdowns.
Hurr durr. Bands of the same genre sound the same. Hurr durr.
These guys are fucking sick. They’re from my town and they were won of the first local shows I went to. I remember some MASSIVE metal head dude beating the utter crap out of this skinhead and everyone was stoked. You should check out Chase’s (the guitarist) other Now defunct deathcore band The Taste of Blood.
Also, @2:19 in the Black page music video you can see a fucking sweet fist bump with the homie Derek from Taste of blood/The Faceless.
Never heard these guys before, not really into deathcore, but I’m fucking moshing. Good shout.
Great to see Animosity getting some love! Animal is a unsung classic, they are defiantly missed
agree!
I can definitely get down with this. This current over-saturated deathcore hasn’t produced any band as good as this.
I saw animosity at a legion hall back in 2008. There were about 70 people there who didn’t look too impressed with animosity and the other bands that were touring with them had more enthusiasm than the crowd. I remember that First Blood received more response at their lowest point than Animosity at their highest that night. I still love all of animosity’s music.
Sarge, you’re mirin’ somebody’s Odious Mortem shirt? Really? I thought that band was textbook beta internet metal nerd bullshit?
whereas SYWH makes fun of shit D likes and his ‘persona’ is an exaggerated version of his personality, in point of fact D is an IMN. i only know this from reading the site. wish it had more football content, fwiw.
Mirin the second story window shirt. and the favt they had to do with taste of blood. kinda miss good deathcore+deathcore scene. red chord-clients is intense
I’ve loved this band since I was like 15, it sucks they never seem to get the credit they deserve. The only reason I even know about them though is because back when I was a little scene fuck in high school, the guys who were obviously way too old to be hanging out at the local deathcore/metalcore shows (and obviously just went to check out/unsuccessfully hit on 15 year-old scene sluts) would always be wearing Animosity shirts. Every fucking time.
I saw Animosity play with Job for a Cowboy in this shitty little art gallery thing in Tucson, AZ. This was back when JFACs Doom E.P. was their only release so they weren’t big yet. Anyways Animosity was really good and people seemed way more into them than JFAC but look what happened like a year later. JFAC blew up and no cares about Animosity.
So much love for Animosity.
I was actually doing a metal/hardcore show in Santa Cruz in the early ’00s and I would rock them all the time. Totally agree they were ahead of their time, as I definitely wasn’t refer to them as “deathcore” then (as I don’t think i’d heard the term).
I was actually invited to participate in the video shoot for “The Black Page”, but because I am a loser I didn’t go.
Also loving the Odious Mortem reference. Ahh the memories
downloading everything now
I do miss that little golden spot before deathcore became a parody of itself, where 99% of the bands came from rich parts of Cali and Myspace was still relevant.
Animal is one of the few albums that doesn’t give me ‘deathcore fatigue’.
im an oldbro (32) and just heard the term ‘metalcore’ as i was first hearing hearing animosity like 7 yrs ago (who is ‘deathcore’ i guess; a genre i would not learn of till like 2005-6– being old and all). anyways loved animosity then and rock them still. no idea theyed broken up. oh well :(
is lgmb still a thing, old people?
is being literate still a thing?
that buns :(
their t-shirt designs were top notch, i must admit that
I got to see them twice. They were pretty solid both times. When i saw them at the Eagles Lodge in Wichita opening for The Number 12 Looks Like You/Ed Gein/Through The Eyes of The Dead in like march of 06, I bought a sweet pipe from them that had “Animosity” blown into it.
Played a show with them at the Showcase Theater back around 2004, and they were pretty nice dudes.
These dudes were a deathcore supergroup, essentially, just no one gave a fuck about the guys in it because it was before br00tal deathcore was trendy. Each member in this band is more talented than 90% of deathcore bands formed post 2006 combined.
Oh yeah, I’m still repping my Animosity gear. Gold foil hoodie + the neon Animal shirt that came with my preorder package. Nothing but love for this band.
The good old time when hardcore and death metal goes hand in hand. The good old time when deathcore bands keep the ethics and gimick of REAL DIY HARDCORE,nothing to do with clothes, gay tsunami hair, teenage angst..If more band play like this i’m going back to considering ”deathcore’, a offshot hardcore.not like today glam metal with generic metalcore breakdown and genric death metal chromatic play.
So this is the post where you reveal to the children that you’re actually a huge poser? Animosity was a joke and so are your lame posts, nerd
My love for you just grew to uncharted amounts. Animosity= always haz been and alwayz probably will b fav deathcore band. TERRORSTORM
Came across Empires when I was like 10 years old, and man, that album had a massive impact on me. I picked up metal drumming, and seriously built my style around Navene’s playing. It’s cool to see that some of those guy’s went on to be relativity successful; the first time I Chase with Decrepit Birth, well that was fucking tight. Bunch of fun dudes who knew how to play their instruments, and never took themselves too seriously! Miss that band.
Bay areas finest!!! Shitt gets crazy when they come to sacto!!!!
Blake from workaholics is in this video!
