SILVERSTEIN goes skram: they are covering ORCHID

I never listened to Silverstein and always assumed they were fggts, so I was very surprised to hear about their upcoming album. It’s called “Short Songs!”, and half will be original, fast hardcore songs under 90 seconds- pretty surprising in its own right. The other half will be covers of bands including Dead Kennedys, NOFX, Descendents, Green Day, Gob, and (wait for it) ORCHID!

  • LOL @ that Canadian accent– “it’s BEAN a busy year for Silverstein” and “thinking ABOAT the scene we came from.”
  • Super stoked on how butthurt all the fggt skram elitists will be about this- “WTF SILVERSTEIN ISN’T ALLOWED TO LIKE WHAT I LIEK!!!!”
  • I hate American Nightmare and Propaghadi, but I’m glad that they’re giving some dap to sweet bands like NOFX and Green Day (srs)!
  • Props for covering the awesome Canadian band Gob, they were VERY underrated- big ups to the American sludge/PV Gob, they were really cool guys, but the Canadian Gob were SICK (peep their best song here)
  • I listened to Orchid once for like 20 seconds and there was too much screaming for me to handle, but I remember Will Dandy from his previous band Laceration and generally being an awesome dude, so I back them. Fun fact: the first band I ever interviewed was Capitalist Casualties back in 1994, and Will was the guy who put me in touch with them!

Basically my thoughts are summed up by Master Of Onions:

LOOK AT ALL THAT NO FUN CLUB. Deah lawd, take a chill pill. Hardcore isn’t some holy grail of music that nobody else can like. It’s almost as if you’re all only listening to teh skramz just so you can listen to something nobody else listens to in . These are good doods who grew up with hardcore covering something they like. This is the same as Alex Bigman being in Fight Fair or that guy from Poison the Well being in Sleigh Bells. I think it’s pretty fucking cool that hardcore kids have infiltrated so many different kinds of music. Also their Propagandhi and American Nightmare covers were fuckin great, will be listening to this.

U mad, skram snobs?? Will Alex Bigman be voted out of office as SKRAM COMMANDER??? In b4 tumblrsluts start friend requesting Billy Werner.

I’m tempted to say any band covering Orchid are poseurs trying to gain scene points, cos no-one actually listens to that crap for any other reason, surely?

    • BrayseLaygz says:

i actually love orchid.. and i dont listen to any other skramz bands. found out about them because of United Nations.

    • Jon says:

Thats where you’re wrong, Orchid are a good band, people don’t listen to screamo to gain scene points, christ nobody is that pretentious.

      • VyceVictus says:

        No opinion on Orchid, but:
people don’t listen to *insert genre* to gain scene points, christ nobody is that pretentious
        Do you REALLY believe that?

        • Jon says:

I’ll have to admit that statement was alot more naive than intended. The point is he said screamo is noise that nobody likes is unfair and saying that a post-hardcore band covering Orchid is a poseur move is simple minded. It’s just like saying Orchid are “entry level” for their style and Silverstein should cover something more obscure, if they like the bands who are we to get off saying they’re poseurs?

  2. xRCx says:

I was genuinely mad when I first saw about this.

  3. chris says:

    The butthurt…it hurts!!!

  4. Grindcore Ted says:

I think I’m cool with this, I love Orchid and don’t give half a shit about Silverstein. I barely know who they are lolz

  5. uppercut613 says:

gob! they have better songs than the one you linked though imo.

    this ones pretty sick

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZALxSX7AmLY
anything off “too late… no friends” is pretty awesome

  6. Sergeant D says:

I forgot to add that the original Silverstein “fast hardcore” songs actually sound really good!

  7. Save Parker says:

I really like this idea, gotta wait to see how it turns out.

  8. TheRealAnarack says:

I’m stoked for this! Been a huge Silverstein fan since ’04 and they have yet to disappoint me.

  9. Anonymous says:

i am one of those butthurt skram elitists you were talking about, but i for one am not really too butthurt. i mean, i kind of am, but i’m actually excited for this. the short part of the song they played was actually pretty cool. i would have given them more points if they didn’t cover something so entry level, like orchid. maybe it will expose some kids who aren’t into punk and hardcore to some really awesome music, turning them from scenefags into awesome diy bros! or they could be totally pretentious assholes. who knows. either way i’m excited to hear this

  10. Alex bigman says:

Silverstein are one of the bands who bastardized hardcore and “Screamo” def paved the way for bands like attack attack and woe is me. I actually liked some of their songs in 2004-05 but them repping skramz is such a joke… Cool bro you collect some Screamo vinyl, have you ever even been involved in the Screamo community? No

You can’t be a hot topic “Screamo” band then rep DIY skramz… is this a double standard since I was in fight fair? No because fight fair is a POP band and wasn’t a fake Screamo band. Also I have been very involved in DIY hardcore for the Past 10 years. What so Silverstein like some entry level skramz so they want to gain some cred from Wave fans by covering teh_orhcidz?(wave fans were very humorously Silverstein/senses fail fans 2-3 years ago) gtfo out of skram life silverstein, what an embarrassment. Long live cmhwak, the wave will crash

  11. alex says:

Lol @ Skram elitists. I love skramz, hot topic screamo, pop punk, moshcore, deathcore, metalcore, grindcore, electrocore, easycore, death metal, black metal, post metal, grunge, post rock, ska, reggae, hardcore techno & alternative hip hop. Fuck get over your stupid scenes and just enjoy all the great music out there. I mean when you’re on your death bed are you honestly gonna be like “Damn I regret that one time I listened to I See Stars. Now I can never be tru skramz. NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!”

  12. Alexander says:

another emo violent skram elitist chiming in: IDC about Silverstein. I will probably never listen to this. this has no influence or effect on skram life whatsoever. it’s cool if people get into some of these bands via Silverstein though.

  13. Anonymous says:

One day the skramz elitists will wake up and realize they’re getting butthurt about some genre of music in a webpage that has Hello Kitty, tacky scene “bling”, teddy bears and other scene-ish, childish stuff as its background and they will realize just how badly they have failed life. Don’t let that be you!

  14. Chinny chin chins says:

There are people in the world making music that I don’t approve of and I am mad.

  15. worldsbiggestjosh says:

I’m backing this as someone who started out on Silvertein and other super entry level stuff (now an unashamed Ikeacore fan). It’s not because I still listen to Silverstein or even like half of bands they’re covering, it’s just because this is a GOOD idea. Why not do something different and FUN that takes very little effort and sells records?

  16. MasterOfOnions says:

I HAVE BEEN QUOTED BY THE GREAT SARGE D.

MY LIFE HAS NOW BEEN VALIDATED. Can now die happy, thanks sarge!

  17. John says:

This EP = The only time you’ll get to hear all these shitty ass old bands with good production; and Silverstein probably has more chops and more talent than any of the shitty ass old bands did.

  18. jake says:

thebigmin = SKRAM BOSS, not skram commander.

also, orchid rules, and i don’t really care that silverstein is covering them, but since alex has a differing opinion, i consider that the edict of the matter.

  19. MasterSlave says:

I have NEVER heard of ‘skramz’ outside of Sergeant D’s writing

  20. ttttttttt says:

When is the Scene Goes Skramz album coming?

  21. kottermole says:

everyday i think this site can’t get any better…then this!

    LOL!

  22. Leandro S. says:

Cmon, sarge! dont give them a hard time because they’re canadians. Canada is awesome! I fucking love Silverstein and Orchid, cant wait to hear it!

  23. Taytex says:

I give them major props for this. I don’t really listen to Silverstein (although now that I think about it, I’ve probably never given them a solid chance and have no idea what they actually sound like) but this is admirable. They’re obviously very comfortable and confident with where they are right now, and don’t mind the risk of alienating some of their fans. I’m a skramhead, so the fact that they even know who Orchid is shows that they aren’t typical scenebros. Fuck pretentious elitists, if this can open earlier screamo bands up to a group who wouldn’t have heard it otherwise than I’m all for it. These are the same kind of people who complain about kids listening to shit music, but the second they get a shot to listen to “good” music it’s some sort of catastrophe.

    • neonjesus says:

Never understood that whole ‘haha you listen to shit music. wait no! don’t like good music’ mentality that some people have. If kids start listening to your ‘underground’ bands then they can stick around instead of having to break up because they are broke as fuck. Playing for 15 kids a night is totally awesome and makes you mountains of money.

Basically, if you want your favorite tr00 bands to stick around they need to get mildly popular just to sustain themselves.

On topic, I like the idea of this album. Silverstein were a band I liked when they first came out because I was really into that scene at the time but I drifted away from it towards more straight up hardcore oriented stuff and kind of forgot about them. I might check them out now thanks to this.

  24. Fuck Art says:

It’s painfully obvious that these Silverstein dudes are posers. They want to come off as “edgy” and “credible” so they cover the worst band in hardcore history (AN) and fucking Orchid. This is safe girlfriend in the car shit. If they were really down they’d be covering Siege, “Foreign Job Lot,” or something by Combat 84.

  25. Perverted Tom says:

someone still covers Gob?! Fucking cool

P.S. don’t like Silverstein, don’t know what Orchid are

  26. idrivearangerover says:

I’ve never listened to Silverstein. There was a time where this would have bothered me, but I really don’t care. In fact I am glad they are doing this.

  27. Anonymous says:

can you really even be a “skramz elitist” if you actually call it skramz???? as if “screamo” wasnt retarded enough…

  28. Gohannabis says:

I heard they passed on a One Eyed God Prophecy cover cause all the skramz woulda been clueless

  29. Brenden Sheard says:

Silverstein’s been my favorite band for 5 years. ADVANCE UPON ME BRETHREN

That being said, I’m totally biased when it comes to this band, given that my appreciation for them has clouded my ability to tell if they’ve ever written anything bad or not.

I remember seeing a ton of their interviews and they’re kinda oldfags surprisingly, so all these covers make a ton of sense. I kinda want to see if they continue this “almost-srscore” sound of theirs.
