I’m not a hater, but I can’t lie: the rising popularity of tr00 pop punk and ikeacore bums me out. It’s not just because those genres are boring and shitty, it’s because I feel like their success comes at the expense of two of my favorite genres: pop-punk and easycore. But don’t worry brahs, EASYCORE’S NOT DEAD!
The proof is in one of our favorite bands, CITY LIGHTS. Their album dropped earlier this month, and it’s awesome. Not only that, but they have a new video starring all your favorite bros from Stuff You Will Hate! And by “starring SYWH,” I mean that our very own ShawnYouWillHate appears in the video for about 3/4 of a second.
The video has pretty much everything you could ask for from a 2011 easycore band. Orange amps? Check. Light leak-laden footage of bros chilling and having a BBQ? Check. Jumping in place? Plaid shirts? A couple 7.5s who they know from the tattoo shop?? Check and check! Also, at 2:40 DAT BREAKDOWN.

This gave me a bit of that “Earnestness” vibe that you got from the Hundreths video.

that’s because the owner/editor in chief is like 45 and a huge NFCer. i know for a fact he hates most of the stuff they cover and wishes he could still write about Shellac or whatever like it’s 1994 (srs)– I guess Defeater et al is the closest thing to oldfag rock in 2011.
If you are a well adjusted human being with some semblance of a sense of humor you are obviously not a tr00 artist and therefore incapable of making good music.

I agree with you on tr00 pop punk vs. pop punk but I don’t think the rise of ikea-core hurts easycore. It might just be due to the fact that I enjoy me some ikea-core but I don’t really see them as opposites.
not a huge fan of this genre, but the songs pretty good. the breakdown def takes the song from meh to good. and it looks like everyone in the video is having an awesome time, which is crucial to this genre. i def don’t want to see anyone stangry or sad or srs or whatever people my age would look like. KEEP IT LIGHT & POSI!!!!
