@alexbigman launches the official SKRAM LIFE blog

Ever have a friend who is awesome in every way except for the fact that he’s into some super embarrassing thing?? Like, he’s the best dude ever and you love him, but sometimes it makes you cringe because he brings up LARPing, parkour, or how he’s building a rollerblade course in his backyard? Every time he mentions it you sharply inhale, wince and think to yourself “Bro… I love you but fuck… you’re not making it easy for me.”

For example, I consider FIGHT FAIR/SEEING MEANS MORE vocalist Alex Bigman one of my top bros. I just try to overlook his cringeworthy obsession with 90s screamo aka skramz. As someone who was actually there for all the vegan bake sales, basement benefit shows for Mumia, and debates over whether barcodes and CDs were ‘punk’ or not, I have no idea why a 25 year old rich Jew from the Bay Area suburbs would be into one of the most embarrassing eras of hardcore. But he’s my bro, and I’m always here for my bros!

Also check out Alex’s new online video property SkraMtv, featuring exclusive tracks like “Black Swag” by All Stars Of Screamo (f/t Loma Prieta, Comadre, and Ampere)

I know some of you guys are also into teh skramz, so check out his new project, the official SKRAM LIFE blog! He told me he wants to be Tumblrfamous (srs, those were his exact words), so please help him with his being Tumblrfamous goals for 2012. From his inaugural post, “WHAT DOES SKRAMZ MEAN TO ME?”

Skramz is not just a genre of music to me….Skramz is a LIFESTYLE. It’s an elite way of going about everyday life. Whether it’s watching obscure science fiction movies from the Soviet Union, wearing custom/limited dry denim from overseas, making fun of people not from California, or even as simple as getting shots of Agave tequila at the bar instead of vodka…I live, breathe, and BLEED skramz.

And that’s just SKRAM LIFE.

When it comes down to it, the skramz lifestyle is great but the MUSIC is all that matters. Playing in skramz bands, collecting records, putting out zines, posting on CMHWAK, owning the SKULL SPLIT, and GOING TO SUPPORT LOCAL/TOURING DIY SKRAM BANDS. This is what’s important….everything else comes second.

If I had teh Nocturnus time machine I’d take Bigman with me to the s hows I frequented in the early/mid 90s. I once saw Heroin open for Jawbreaker, Torches To Rome open for Will Haven and Focal Point (not even kidding) and many more oddball combos.
I hated the smell of the skrams dudes then, if they were more into surfing they might’ve been a little less insufferable.

    screamo

  5. JAShearman says:

This reminds me off something I was going to say in the last post but got sidetracked and never posted.
When you were saying how Aus seems like the funnest country with even srscore being fun… YOU WERE RIGHT! Even skramz is fun!
I was at a Loma Prieta/Raein house show the other day, was the funnest thing ever. As soon as I got there complete strangers were chucking me beers and trying to get Raein to cover Slayer, everyone was chill as fuck.

You cannot fail in life if your last name is Bigman.

  7. Lucifersmile says:

When I was in Inkwell, you wouldn’t be caught dead in tight jeans at a show.

  8. Lucifersmile says:

Having been there from 91-97, I don’t see what kids are taking away from what we were up to back then. Maybe cuz I’m oldz, but the “skramz” lovers now don’t seem to really get it.

    • jake says:

you still live in GA bro?

      • entrylevelemo says:

wut the only thing that changed are clothes, music is still the same, no innovation. except for a few a bands, if you are all about DIY/Ethics/, most bands still are all about that.

      • lucifersmile says:

no, i got the fuck outta there 8 years ago and moved to Cali.

        • gotcha. you probably don’t care, but i really enjoy your band post-humously. i didn’t really get into the style until around 2001 (thanks to portrait) but i still listen to inkwell on the regular.

    • Alexander says:

what are they not “getting”? just curious, as an outsider.

      • lucifersmile says:

the music is not the same. it can’t be. there will never be another Indian Summer, cuz no one rips off Fugazi anymore. there will never be another Still Life, 12 minute songs about love? do kids still protest shit cuz we had a protest every weekend? Current, Angel Hair, Capn Jazz, Honeywell, Julia, or any Bloodlink records bands, Merel, Native Nod, Mohinder, Union of Uranus? that can never happen again, but it’s cute to see kids try.

With everything tr00 maybe skramz will be big soon. Way less annoying to me that tr00 pop punk, and that new Loma record was pretty sweet.

I’ll take some skramburgerz all day.

  15. freddy popstar says:

Skramz master Alex invented the word skramz .CmHwak for life.

  17. shawnyouwillhate says:

the only reason i went to those shows in 99 was because I wasn’t into girls yet

Bigman should market a “Skramz Life” patch with a Winnie the Pooh & Tigger graphic on it.

I think Sturgis should produce some skramz.

Guitarist “hey man the guitar and the drums are supposed to be out of sync at that spot it adds to the unnerving tone of the song.”
Joey, “Yeah but everyone will like it if it sounds good.”

    • i remember that I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism In Your Yearbook (some of those dudes formed loma prieta later) had in their myspace “we don’t know how to play our instruments we know how to play our songs”

  23. Alexander says:

    Alex Bigman is hot

  24. anon says:

for the love of god..once again…..please post more detailed lulzy recollections and anecdotes about 90s screamo/hc. i would love to hear it, for my own nerdy reasons, and im sure your inimitable sensibility would make it that much more hilarious

  27. Derp says:

  28. LOLZ says:

nothing beats that seeing means more track where bigman bitch screams about some girl for like 30 seconds then transitions into an EXTRA BR00TAL skramzcore breakdown
