I originally made this slam mixtape because people seem to always be shocked and excited that i listen to metal or whatever because i DJ and produce hip hop shit. People shit their pants cause i was wearing a darkthrone t shirt on stage or whatever and always ask me what bands I like so i just made something to put on my web site for people to check out. I love slam because it is simple and fun, and the kind of people who also enjoy it are people i enjoy being around , unlike shitty elitist metal nerds who will probably ‘dislike’ this via some online network and write 0% reviews for these records on metal archives.com . So here is my idiots guide to understanding slam version 2.0 and i will write some shit about each song.

Suffocation – Catatonia
I had to include something from Human Waste because that record really started me on my death metal journey. There was a time when i was really only into punk, hardcore, and hip hop and most death metal i heard was not too interesting to me but when I heard that EP it changed everything. I don’t really want to hear a million complex time signatures or hear people show off on their instruments I just want straight ignorant mosh. The opening riff of this song sounded like it could have been a breakdown off any NY hardcore record i grew up on but they put a more brutal spin on things and I was just blown away. I remember playing this on my sony discman in the hallway of my high school feeling ready to bulldoze mosh my math teacher.

Internal Bleeding – Gutted Human Sacrifice
After discovering suffocation I pretty much kept them in rotation for years and didnt even bother trying to get into too many other bands because their excellent body of work satisfied my DM needs but after a while i got interested in finding other bands who sound like them and thats how i found these guys, who are pretty much a suffocation clone , which is a perfect band to me. The vocals arent really as strong as Frank Mullen’s but they seem to focus even more on SLAMS which is good. This song also has some of the best “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeYUH” and “YUH”s of all time.

Dehumanized – Fade Into Obscurity
This is more excellent new york death metal. I love this band because their riffs and slams are amazing and they have some really brutal shit going on but they also throw in a nice guitar solo and some technical shit for all the true metal guys to enjoy. Dying fetus covered this and its cool but everyone should know this version because its just perfect all around.

Morpheus Descends – Immortal Coil
I never really saw anyone talk about these guys and i dont know why because this shit is really great. another one from NY (really proud of NY for being so good). The production has the perfect kind of muddiness that I think can only be created by accident. I like shit like this because I think its before bands really set out to be a ‘slam band’ and just were playing their own style of brutal shit and it happened to be good for pit slamming.

Disciples of Berkowitz – Gut Splattered Slut
This band is another one of my favorites that that seem to be virtually unknown nowadays. I like this song because they did something cool around 2 minutes in and do sort of a ‘real music’ ‘ soft guitar’ breakdown to give everyone a break from slam dancing . I think more bands should do that and maybe replace one grinding part with one soft/real music part to give everyone a break once in a while.

(this is also a different Repudilation song for the same reason. BUT EQUALLY CRUSHING!)

Repudilation – M.S.O.
The opening slam here is definitely of the hardest of all time. This song is pretty interesting because it’s a mixture of really brutal parts which at times are almost incomprehensible due to the shitty production but there is also some PRIME sweatpants / sideways hat mosh going on here. I have no idea what the words are but it sounds like he’s almost rapping. The vibe i get from bands like this which some call ‘wigger slam’ is that the vocalist really wanted to be in a nu metal band or rap but his friends were all into death metal so they compromised and made slam. Everyone wins.

Devourment – Babykiller
To me suffocation are the God of slam and Devourment is Jesus Christ. They really came along and showed everyone that you don’t even have to have other parts in your song other than slams. Why make people wait for slams inbetween other parts when that’s all they want to hear anyway. Also to prove my point about slam fans being cool bros any time i wear devourment merch in public i meet the friendliest non elitest bros who just want to talk about slam and other cool fucked up shit. Always in non metal places too.

Dripping – Passing Through The Spheres of Abstract Thought
Dripping is one of those bands where I can’t tell if they are trolling or some really fucked up psychos and i like that. The production on their stuff is so cool and unique but i also can’t tell if they did it on purpose or it just came out like that. I really recommend listening to anything you can find from these guys they kind of sound like if devourment started doing a lot of acid and listening to rap and bad trance music.

Cropment – Pinned and Skinned
This is by far the catchiest slam of all time. The main/opening riff gets stuck in my head all day if I hear it. It almost sounds a little too melodic . I don’t even know how they pulled it off. Just listen and you’ll understand.

Stabwound – Divine Gluttony
This shit is really special because they are from sweden and I thought sweden only had SRS and melodic death metal. They sound like authentic NYDM bros from the 90′s. They did a great job capturing the essence of true american sweatpants / old navy tech vest mosh. The pinch harmonics at the beginning are amazingly tough.

Disfiguring the Goddess – Chthonian
I just found out about this band and the guy Big chocolate and i was blown away. This is exactly what brutal DM should sound like in this day and age. It has that perfect level of overproduction that you’d find on a “death-core” song but its just straight mosh and no extra bullshit. Someone tell big chocolate im proud of him and i think wed be #1 bros.

Cephalotripsy – Uterovaginal Insertion of Extirpated Anomalies
This band really perfected the slam . This is another song that is catchy to me which is just weird. I find myself walking around singing the growls even tho I have no idea what hes actually saying. This is also a really groovy record I dare anyone to not bop their head to that main slam. I am really into the kind of “dun dun dun DUNDUNDUN dun dun DUNN DUNN” groove.

Cerebral Incubation – Malignant Spiculated Legion
This song is really just here for anyone who wants to hear more shit like cephalotripsy. I think its the same guitarist and he damn near recycles slams on the cerebral incubation record. Also love that snare.

Artery Eruption – Utilize All Holes
This band is cool because they kind of have that youtube porn grind thing going on with the fucked up samples and song titles but they play really legit brutal slam instead of weird computer generated grindcore with fart vocals. While trying to figure out what to write about this im realizing I guess you have to be pretty fucked to enjoy this stuff because it would be so offensive to a normal human but I find it pretty funny.
