Does HIT THE LIGHTS have more than 2.5 good songs??

I think it’s pretty dumb when people dismiss bands by calling them “one hit wonders,” because most bands have ZERO good songs. I mean, I’ll probably never listen to an Alkaline Trio song other than “Stupid Kid,” but I’m OK with that, because that one song is pretty fucking great.

What bums me out way more than bands with only one good song is bands with 2 or 3 good songs, because that means they have the potential to be really good but for whatever reason never lived up to it. For example, easycore pioneers HIT THE LIGHTS, who are frustratingly inconsistent. If they could only live up to their potential, they really should have been ADTR (and probably could have been). From what I can tell they have 2.5 good songs and a bunch of boring, slow filler- am I missing something??

I really, really wish all their songs sounded like “Coast To Coast,” which is a fucking banger from beginning to end. I wish it wasn’t about how awesome the midwest is (because the midwest really is not awesome at all), but whatever, a catchy chorus is a catchy chorus!

“Statues” is their second best song IMO. Not sure why it doesn’t get any love and they’ve never played it in the 4 or 5 times I’ve seen them. Also, MOST FUCKING SCENE ALBUM COVER EVAR- nothing says “The Neon Years” like those CMYK paint splatters!!

I like “Drop The Girl,” but IMO it only counts for half of a good song because it’s just good (not quite great). What we have here is a clear case of “No breakdown? Not music.”

After a long layoff, they are back with a new EP. Vague, weird name? Artsy picture of a space jellyfish on the front? Conspicuous lack of neon? Coded messages in slowed down songs?? Y SO SRS????

Wat u think?? Are there any HTL songs I slept on?? Will they ever rediscover fun, or have they become oldfags like everyone else over 19? Do you think they are bummed that City Lights does their sound better than they themselves do it????

    better with collin

  3. Mark says:

Bodybag was a great song, still gets played in clubs around here. Otherwise kind of agreed on this band: could have been great, ended up being a bit meh.

  4. Mills2k says:

Cry Your Eyes Out and Back Breaker from Skip Schools are breakdowns galore.

Invicta is good but is more straight up pop-rock. I don’t know if as a band they’ve got more srs but that album is sorta trying some sorta Stadium Rock vibe. I still like it

  5. ryanhatesthis says:

Bodybag is their best song because it’s a Boys Night Out song without any screaming, you know, for making out with chicks.

  6. Dre says:

Did you see what he did there with the GB reference? GB anyone? Anyone….?

  7. Bill says:

In my opinion everything off of Skip School Start Fights is golden. Super catchy album.

Definitely agree, lots of solid jams on that album. Agree with Sgt D on “Drop the Girl”, though – the “DROP THE GIRL!” call out right before the B part demands a breakdown, and I get a little disappointed every time I listen to it.

duude i usually agree with your musical opinions, but i have to say, “skip school, start fights” is an amazing album all the way through. definitely one of my all time favs.

    • Sergeant D says:

I guess I may have stated things a little too strongly: I think that whole album is pretty good, but only 2 songs are REALLY good.

      • uppercut613 says:

yeah drop the girl is my fav song on the album, but “stay out”, “hangs em high” and “back breaker” are all really solid jams. “don’t wait” is really good for a slow/emotional too.

wow city lights does sound like hit the lights now that i think of it.. and their names are so similar too.. weird

  9. afuckingdragon says:

At the risk of sounding like an oldfag – their first album was much better! the call out, make a run for it and pretty much every other track on that CD is pure gold. A beautiful slice of emotional-aggressive-pop-punk

  10. Latinoheat! says:

no fucken way… nothing says the neon years for me like Benny Bennassi, The kid cudi “day n night” remix, and scene kids…. fucken loved making out w/ the scene girls at backyard parties then when the parties got raided would check on their sidekix where the next party would be @ via myspace…. goddamn i miss the mid to late 2000′s …. stupid raving/facebook/elektro/jerking/skinny jeans trendies had to ruin it non-ironically after 08/09…

With you 100% on HTL. H8 Ur guts x infinity on A3 tho.

  12. ps3 has no games says:

Like his is a stick up….don’t make it a murder is like a solid album…….like brah.

  13. Pixy says:

Seeing these guys with D.R.U.G.S and LMTF on sunday. Pretty stoked

  14. tony montana says:

……but this boys night out should have been filling up arenas

  15. Mills2k says:

Would say though – don’t really see the scene element beyond the odd Glamour Kills reference and neon artwork. They all have shaved heads and Nick commonly reps RGN SUP vests etc. To me they’re a good little inbetween of pop punk, easycore and tr00 pop punk

  16. Matt says:

Sarge, the Until We Get Caught EP is probably the best thing they’ve put out. I lived outside of Lima when that released, those shows were fun as hell.

  17. Aids McPenis says:

they kind of sound like Anberlin on the new stuff.

  18. A.E. says:

Bodybag. Just…how can you compete with that amount of absurdity?

  19. fxckdatbish says:

had to comment on hit the lights. if you look up their very first EP “Until We Get Caught”.
that shit is all bangers except like one track. it really was because the original singer Colin Ross imo. cause even the first Lp (although a let down) wasn’t all shitty.
