Do you liek STRUCTURES??

I’ll let you guise in on a secret: I’m a little bit of a closet drum nerd. Don’t get me wrong, I myself am a terrible drummer, but when nobody’s looking I sometimes geek out over sweet drumming :( The person who got me into drum fggtry is my friend Todd (a sick drummer in his own right), so when he told me I should check out STRUCTURES because ‘their drummer is hella rad,’ I jumped on it like a Jew on dime. When Todd says jump, my only question is “How high, bro??”

Actually, that’s a lie: he told me to check them out several months ago, but I didn’t get around to it until just now. In no particular order, here are my thoughts:

  • These guys are what IMN/beardo/musicfag bands like BTBAM, Meshuggah, DEP, etc would sound like if they actually looked up from their fretboards for 1.5 seconds and remembered to write actual SONGS instead of gay riff salad. Dem gang vocals + dat STRAY FROM THE PATH-style semi-breakdown at 1:00 = you’re moshing, only you have a ponytail and transitions lenses that prevent you from going completely buck.
  • They look like chill bros who would be the assistant manager of the Pro Audio department at Guitar Center and would hook you up with a 10% discount on a XLR cable because you were wearing a Donnybrook shirt
  • :45 the combo of a sweep picking run over breakdown/bounce riff makes me feel funny inside… not sheriff innovative way to make ‘fretboard wizardry’ not as gay, or still gay. So conflicted insied :/
  • I honestly wonder how bands like this remember how to play their songs, since you can’t really understand the lyrics and the arrangements make absolutely no sense. Do they have ‘riff teleprompters’?? Pls rspnd

I’m nit really into the music, but as a guitar player I’ve got a lot of respect for this and all the other BTBAM sounding bands. I wouldn’t buy the album, but I’d go see them live if I got the chance.

  2. Thug Waffle says:

Their song with Thanoz is pretty cool but it’s a shame he didn’t have much time on the track

  3. Anonymous says:

is the Meshuggah guitar tone a preset on ipads now?

  4. stonewall says:

“transitions lenses that prevent you from going completely buck.”

this whole transition lens thing is my new favorite sywh meme.

  5. Girl U Gay! says:

Their first ep goes pretty fucking hard. Wasn’t into this album as much but still worth listening to.

  6. Japes says:

Ugg I pride myself on being pretty butthurt proof, but your continued musical racism is starting to make me feel like I’m sitting on the poopot after eating a big ass bowl of raw habanero seeds bro. All these anti IMN and “all metal fans are fggts” comments are starting to make me wonder if you “really get what this site is about” Sarge. The only explanation I can come up with is that you grew up/live on the west coast where literally 98% of the populace are fggts so maybe your’re dealing with a skewed sample group. Anyway keep it positive brah!

    • this guy has the comments says:

if u are getting butthurt about IMN racism, it means u r an IMN.

    • Void Eater says:

I’m a huge metal fan and have no problem that saying all metal fans are fggts. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s still possible (albeit rare) to like metal and be cool and chill, but a fggt nonetheless.

      • Autodidact says:

Back tard. I’m still a huge metal fan but I do agree that metal fans suffer from a male version of Special Snowflake Syndrome via “i litsen to undergorund musick therefor I am superioor”

        • Sergeant D says:

Also, i like how its totally fine for me to mock every other genres fanbase, but when tech metal is in the crosshairs all of a sudden its “LEAVE METAL ALONE!!”

            Cynic plays slams TRUTH

          • @_JonW says:

            Mind = blown. Back tard.

          • The people who like tech metal are the people who got picked on in school. #truthhurts #myownlifestory #acknowledingurownfailingsandworkingthroughthemstayposi

            • Latinoheat!!! says:

just listen to soulfly and hear dem sweet breakdowns in Prophecy plz….

getting butthurt about a lame ass NU-metal/hxcore w/ insert tremolo/solo here band is as lame as getting asshurt about getting butthurt about everyother fucking band that you like..

and no i do not liek structures.. i think meshuggah and a bunch of other bands do it better than this band

              - one of the few chill no fux given IMN’s up in SYWH university (GO MOSHERS) that simultaneously goes to MS community college (GO HEADBANGERS!!!)

  7. Void Eater says:

The comment about transition lenses and ponytails was particularly funny because a couple of hours ago, I was talking to a drummer IMN with a ponytail and glasses. Gonna pull an IMN and say that they sound like Meshuggah but not quite as good, but way better than other bands in that field. Backed.

  8. Lionel Richie says:

If you’ve got a drum kit, you’ve got a gym.

  9. this guy has the comments says:

This whole thing is really interesting because before this post I thought Structures were just a rad as fuck deathcore band, always back them tard even though I didn’t know they were supposedly “technical” or whatever. Now that it’s mentioned I agree though, the drumming is pretty damn impressive.

    • this guy has the comments says:

Actually I think that’s because THE Structures song for me has always been this.

If you aren’t getting your ignorant mosh on the second you hit that link you should probably just go home, and if you are home fuck you.

      • yup says:

        ^THISx1000
I love the lp but in this song they do pretty much every metalcore trope right, it’s a shame they didn’t rerecord it

        • cgrind says:

DUDE this is the song that got me into Structures. If you turn this jam on in the gym, be prepared to slam absurd weights in a chug-induced rage

  10. refusetodie says:

I feel like with BTBAM and DEP, both those bands have gotten WAY better at songwriting with each release. DEP’s last album was straight up catchy at times and I could actually follow BUT I go to college and major in music (inb4 forever unemployed) so I am probs biased :/

Anyway, this band is pretty sweet. I’d probably mosh.

    • Sergeant D says:

I shouldve said The Faceless or something, because you are correct. Both of those bands have gotten much more subdued and focused over the years.

    • honestabebread says:

I love every DEP release land agree that Option Paralysis has the best songwriting; but BTBAM is straight up faggot shit that sucks.

      • chh says:

I have mad love for CI, the Patton EP and Miss Machine but I fell off with Ire Works(it’s still a stroooong release, milk lizard goddamnit partroooock!!!) and onward. I recognize the progression and betterment of themselves, but nothing beats nostalgia! DID I STUTTER DID I STUTTER DID I STUTTER. Nothing will ever beat CI. I’d include the UtRB EP but I’d look like a jerk acting like I was on their dick back then.
As for BTBAM I love a handful of songs on Alaska. Chorus in the first song is HUUUGE. Outro to Selkies fuuu. Rest of their albums can ggfuad ;)

  11. Rob says:

This structures album not so great. The All Of The Above EP was freaking awesome though.

  12. Anonymous says:

have to jump on the band wagon and say the EP was better imo…
p.s what’s with all of these new “djent” band names sounding alike?? (structures, uneven structure, substructure, textures, circles, periphery, volumes, tesseract, etc.)

  13. Anonymous says:

Is this the only song you checked out? Mebbe listen to Hydroplaning/In Pursuit Of/Clockwork. They’re heavier and have singing in them. Clockwork has a dude from Despised Icon in it too.

    • Godeye says:

“Clockwork” is my favorite, just because of the end. “We tried to reset the clocks…” …tick tick tick… “…so you can FUCK YOURSELF!”

  14. Anonymous says:

i say the mosh lvl is about the same with both albums. That new album is just missing something….maybe its cause sumerian signed them and turned them into sumeriancore…

  15. Dan says:

Talented guys but their songs completely lack structure (lol), especially the EP. Still, they’ll probably develop into a solid tech/djent band (but with fun songs). Also, mirin the clean vox and generic lyrics on the new album.

  16. tickle says:

I love love LOVE this band! Shred-y enough to appease my inner IMN, and fucking br00tal and chaotic enough to satisfy my regular dude urges. Sweet band!

  17. ALLCAPS_USERNAME says:

    0:45- defo still gay

  18. Anonymous says:

I met these guys at different points via living near Toronto, they are super sick bros.

I ended up at a Party with them after one of their gigs.

  19. Neon Jesus says:

Not a big fan of these guys when it comes to their recordings. Little too much technical shit for me, but live these guys fucking kill it. Saw them with Stray From the Path and they almost outdid Stray, which for anyone who has seen Stray knows that’s pretty impressive. Especially considering the amount of tech-y parts in their songs.

  20. fat_rob says:

    needs moar chuggs

  21. AetherJake says:

First time I heard this it was like all gained out and really horrible quality, did they fix it or something?

  22. Theme for a mackerel says:

    Riff teleprompter is good ideaing

    • Considering all fans of that genre are computer geeks, the inter-band feuds and subsequent teleprompter pranks/hacks will yield lulzy results. Consider this idea backed.

  23. Godeye says:

“Nickelbackfan92″ pic is from MetalSucks comments?

  24. yup says:

Nice post, unlike most djent bands, they understand dynamics and use the 7th string for actual riffs to contrast the skronkz, and also have some pretty catchy pop-punk parts. Though, Ive listened to the LP like everyday for the last several months and I still can barely tell what’s gonna happen in each song. Despite dem awesome grooves they still didn’t get that great of a response when i saw them with stray #thatawkwardmomentwhenit’sjustyouandafewscenegirlsmoshingtostructures

p.s. they linked a SYWH article a while ago on their facebook, you should hit em up with an interview and discuss how hard it is to keep your transitions on when your bouncing up and down to transitions

    /facethefuckingavalanche/

  25. Anonymous says:

Actually considered sending you a link to these guys a few months ago. I listened to this band almost exclusively for months because:
    >I like sloppy nonsense riffs
    >Gang vocals and super gay/catchy choruses that immediately and sometimes awkwardly transition straight back into a Canadian man screaming at me like someone has just broken his favorite Tim Horton’s coffee mug
    >They have names like Spyros Georgiou and Brendon Padjasek
    >BREAKDOWNS and BOUNCY RIFFS

The E.P. is good, but I think people hate on the full length mostly because of the production, (which isn’t really a huge issue, for me at least) and because of the clean vocals.

    • Godeye says:

I never really understood why so many people were raging about the guitar tone, it sounds fine to me.

      • Sergeant D says:

NOT RECORDED WITH [musicfag approved gear/settings]? UNABLE TO RESIST ANAL PAIN.

        • FYI, that’s the Axe-FX II you’re talking about. Maybe they only recorded it with the HOPELESSLY outdated Axe-FX Ultra, and are therefore a bad, bad band.

          • Anonymous John says:

I think everyone was taking issue with the mastering, particularly the levels being too high in general. The first time I listened to the album, my headphones pooped throughout the entire experience, but I just attributed this to the band being so fucking heavy that my headphones refused to even try to keep up with them. Regardless, all of their shit is great, and I am definitely looking forward to the next album.

    • Anonymous Ev says:

Also saw Structures with Volumes & T3H Contortionist last year. I personally love this band, not butthurt about production or sumerianism. I fully expect VOL/TURES to be ripping each other off for the next couple years until they start making Structures To Remember t-shirts. I’m still moshing tho.

  26. jorbams says:

Yo Sarge, YouTug “Benny Greb” for some S-Level Drum Jamz.

  27. Todd says:

Youtube “structures encounter drum play though”. Dudes in this band look like they’re real legit bros, would like to go shoe shopping at Zumiez with them, or meet them at a movie theater and make creepy passes at their super hot 18 year old hangerons.

  28. beholdthesharktopus says:

Structures is pretty sweet, but I saw them at the same show I saw Volumes. Structures opened, Volumes came on and BLEW EVERYONE’S FUCKING ASSES OFF. Would strongly recommend them for djenty semi-technical mosh that’s still more catchy than it is tech.

  29. surewhynot says:

Check out their song /. That’s actually the title. It’s legit my favorite song due to it being super pop-punky, with a breakdown that’ll make you shit your pants at the end.

  30. Snakehole says:

Sarge checkout the ignorant mosh at the end of clockwork with the vocalists of ion dissonance and despised icon. WE TRIED TO RESET THE CLOCKS…. Tick tick tick so you can fuck your self
