Good Rap Music: Ampichino, Young Bossi, and Freeze

Ampichino, Young Bossi, and Freeze are three rappers from Akron, OH who have been releasing some of the most impressive rap music for several years now. Chances are you do not know who the fuck these guys are though, but that’s ok, most people don’t. It is pretty difficult to fully grasp why certain rappers blow up and others remain relatively unknown, but I think a large part of it is where you are from. Akron is not exactly the first name in rap music (despite actually having a pretty great scene) and thus these guys have flown under most people’s radar. The Akron scene has aligned itself closely with Bay Area rap in the past decade through countless collaborations and is now starting to get some real attention here in California. The heavy Bay Area collaborations have definitely influenced their style, but they’ve put their own dark spin on the style:

“hop out the scrape, eat ya face, a paid killa” <— Hard as Fuck

Ampichino, Young Bossi, and Freeze along with a handful of other Akron rappers, have carved out a real distinct niche of gangster rap for themselves, that is either melancholy and introspective or hard as fuck, but usually some unique combination of the two. Basically their raps are along the lines of “I am poor and miserable and I’ll shoot your face off.” If that doesn’t sound like good rap music to you, then I’m sorry to bother you, I’m sure you have to get back to reorganizing your Jurassic 5 vinyl collection.

^^^Some real shit on this song. It makes me thankful I did not grow up in their neighborhood.

What appeals to me about their music is that it contains an impressive level of emotional depth and intelligence within the confines of the gangster rap genre. Lots of raps that bounce between remorse over selling drugs and living life illegal and a complete acceptance and boastfulness about everything it has afforded them. Basically they are the Regretcore of rap music. Btw do any of you bros actually live in Akron? Their raps make it sound like an absolutely horrible place filled with nothing but crime and drugs…

Most of the time when someone says a rapper’s music is “actually really smart” it is some terrible rapper that makes white college kids chortle with references to Will Ferrell movies or something. I guarantee you Ampichino, Young Bossi and Freeze will not be making any cute pop culture references anytime soon and continue making raps about selling dope and shooting people for a long time to come.

Such a sick beat here, where do they find these producers?

Anyways, the reason I am writing this post is that Ampichino and Young Bossi just came out with a new duo album titled Cop Heavy Gang 2 that is a great listen. It is probably not the best starting point for people interested in the scene (that would be the trio’s City of G’z and Ampichino’s Mysery), but a solid album nonetheless, especially if you like you like dark, depressing raps. Here is a new song from that:

HIGHLY EMOTIONAL MOBB MUSIC (NO HOMO)

If you like what you hear and are looking for more music from this Akron trio, be sure and check out this mixtape I put together last year of the trio’s best songs. Also check out some other quality rappers from the area such as Ren Fetti, Gap, Shoboat, Chino Nino and V12. Have a great day!

totally agree on “intelligent” rap (shudder). always lame, and the categorization is more than a little racist. it doesn’t take a close listen to hear that the intellect(s) driving these raps may be criminally inclined, but it’s still high-powered.
since it’s constantly in battle, though, there goes the luxury of accumulating easy consumer reference points, like you said. thus, back into the ‘gangsta’ ghetto for you.
      keep banging
