“How to get big in the Pomona scene (30 bass drops)”

As regular readers may know, I consider the San Gabriel Valley (aka the 626) my home away from home. Just east of Los Angeles, nestled between the San Fernando Valley (the 818) and the Inland Empire (the 909), the SGV stretches from the quaint-but-hip shops of Old Town Pasadena to the oceans of Chinese assholes in Alhambra, all the way to the unassuming city of Pomona. It’s not just a paradise of hot pochas and a great place to raise a family, it’s something of a secret ‘mecca of mosh’!

I ur weiner lieks this bish as much as mine does, it will explode with delight the moment you set foot in the 626 because there are literally hundreds of thousands just like her. Sup, Diamond Bar High class of 2008?

At first glance the SGV is basically just a giant sea of strip malls and big box stores, but the thin veneer of crass commercialism hides what is easily the world’s largest concentrations of breakdowns per capita! That’s right, the SGV has been bringing the mosh for decades: back in the day UNASHAMED brought epic mosh4christ from Glendora, Redlands’ XDEATHSTARX moshed the fuck for Jesus, OF MICE & MEN hails from Chino Hills, poppy moshers SUCH A MESS are from Walnut or something, and last but certainly not least there is XIBALBA, who are from Pomona and go harder than any SGV band before or since.

That awkward moment when 30 seconds after pressing play on this joke song, you think to yourself ‘akshually this song is pretty sweet; wood definitely mosh to this if GOLIATH re-recorded it’ (although they are an 818 band they have the SGV sound down perfectly)

This is all a longwinded way of saying that there is definitely a ‘SGV sound,’ and it is the sound of moshing. Which explains the joke behind this song called “How To Get Big In The Pomona Scene (ft 30 Bass Drops).” Check out his Soundcloud page for more hits like “Wut” and “Dat Pattern”!

Hahaha I know that breakdown around the 2 minute mark is supposed to be a joke but I can never forget how there is a Recon song with a breakdown that ACTUALLY sounds like that.

  2. shaneee says:

It’s not even funny how much I love legit songs that sound like this. Probably because I live in Glendora.

  3. evildead says:

  5. YOLO# says:

Only problem with SGV, is there literally TONS of bands, of every genre, but few gain even minor sucsess, A few that come to mind are Confide (Pasadena), Winds Of Plague which are technically 909, but everyone is the valley holds them close, and the drummer is 626 from el monte. And Xibalba, which you already mentioned. Such A Mess is from differnet places, San Gabriel, Rosemead, Arcadia, ect. I think one of the newer members is from Wal Nut, but their mainly SGV. You really gotta look for bands, some are great, others are worse than scum haha, There are so many bands per capita, their aurora of sucking drowns out the better ones sometimes. Kinda like looking through a huge pile shit horse shit, because theres a couple small pieces of gold in there. As for chicks, there is a huge varitey of hot bitches here, so many of them are willing to put out at college parties without you even learning their names, its ridiculous haha. Plus its a great suburbia for those ‘I wanna a house and kid’ types, if you can find a wifeable bish. MOAR LIEK ‘SLAM GABRIEL’ VALLEY AMIRITE!???

  6. Void Eater says:

  11. VyceVictus says:

Yo extra srs, somebody who knows shit about management and has connections or whatever needs to hook these kids up wit Above This for a split EP. They have already put this theory into practice thrice over. http://www.stuffyouwillhate.com/2012/03/above-this-needs-to-get-with-a-pro-producer-stat/#comment-41067

Im psyching myself up imagining the astronomical number of bass drops their powers combined would wrought.

  12. Coffemug says:

pics from the graduation of Diamond Bar High class of 2012 looked like it could have been snapped at any given day in my old neighbourhood in beijing.

  13. B. Edge says:

I associate the San Gabriel Valley with 18-year-old Mexican American males playing “thrash,” and by that I mean really awful hardcore punk played lightning fast, not thrash metal like Anthrax.

I associate the 909 with bass drops 4 christ.

    • Latinoheat!!! says:

“Chicano males playing thrash” = thats everywhere in el-lay brah…. such shittiness is not a crime btw… unless you’re drinking a 40 or two and they cover(butcher) a thrash song you like and get into it!!!

    • Aleksandar says:

gonna have to agree here. lived in Monrovia and El Monte my whole life and in prog and thrash bands myslef. The closest to this we have over here are Job wannabe’s, thankfully. This ‘music’ sucks ass and shows no talent or creativeness.

  14. Shane the other one says:

yee Glendora. I didn’t even know we had any musical talent in this town

  15. Haystack says:

holy fuck… the giggles this song gave me.

  16. SeanD says:

    Pomona brah here. meccaofmosh4lyfe

  17. MatW says:

Sorry, what song is this? Must must must buy.

  18. chadski says:

sarge, if you’re gonna pose like a socal resident, or are planning to move here, you should at least get the geography right.

    redlands = 909/inland empire.

yes, upland is technically inland empire due to being in san bernardino county, but it’s west of fontana/rancho cucamonga/15 fwy & next to montclair so people usually think of it as part of the pomona valley area.

SGV does not include pomona because anything east of the 57 or the kellog interchange is pomona valley. conversely some people consider pomona part of the IE, but that’s highly debatable since pomona is actually in LA county.
