Austin’s neck is so long and wide, and his head is so tiny, like a weird giraffe :( And when did Kirk Hammett join OM&M??
I’ll just come out and say it: it causes me relatively severe buttpain that all the deathcore bands I loved in 2008-2010 are going nu-metal. Not so much because I dislike nu-metal (although I sort of do), but because the whole reason I liked those bands in the first place was that they did something (kinda) new. Given the band’s influential, tastemaking status I was hardly surprised that all the deathcore bands hopped on the nu-metal bandwagon after SUISIDE SILENCE dropped ‘The Black Crown’, but I was surprised to see that even crabcore stalwarts OF MICE & MEN are one step away from putting on clown masks and matching jumpsuits:

That sad, awkward moment when the guy who once proudly embraced crabcore refers to his band as ‘hard rock’

in b4 post-ironic covers of ‘Click Click Boom’ and PUDDLE OF MUDD replace post-ironic Lady Gaga covers

havent checked the song yet but LOOOOOOOOOOL @ rest in peace tr00 crabcore
never liked of mice and men at all though, so if i didnt like their crabcore material, i doubt ill like this
OH MY FUCKING GOD!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? This litterally sounds like something straight off of Slipknots “Iowa”……..fucking ReDONKulous bro……
well, think of it this way. soon people will be doing a killswitch engage-core revival, post-hardcore-alternative-rock-metal-screamo-whatthefuckisthisgenre revival, and with time we’ll have a 2008-era revival full of crunk/death/crab-core and scene girls ^_^
I kinda like the new Of Mice Men song, more than what they previously have released :/
One thing I’m curious about, though, is how it became nu-metal that these bands are starting to copy? What is the logical progression from crabcore to this? Is it JUST because of Suiside Silence, or is there some sort of natural evolution going on that I’m not aware of? Tr00 pop-punk is what happens when pop-punk bands suddenly thinks they’re above being just “fun” and want to make more “credible” music, but nu-metal has zero credibility – someone explain!
I need to write a full post about it, but what it basically comes down to is that you are allowed/encouraged to copy what came 2 ‘scene generations’ before your band (where each generation is ~5 years). It is uncool to copy what was 1 generation before (killswitch-core, in this case), but totally cool to copy from 2 generations before (slipknot).
It is irrelevant whether the material you are copying is good or not, the age is really all that matters.
This makes a lot of sense. The Wonder Years, instead of copying the good times of blink-182, go back a generation to the more angsty sound of Texas is the Reason etc.
Don’t forget how the Descendents are almost universally worshipped now and have been for a couple years. I don’t quite remember them receiving the same amount of adoration five years ago, for instance.
The Descendants have been worshiped since at least the early-90′s… no one wanted to sound like them tho.
Alright, then it’s just me that’s slow to pick up on those things. Move along people, nothing to see here.
Well, I do think Descendents-jocking is at an all-time high for sure. Especially among Tumblrfags jumping on the ‘fapping over music from 10 years before i was born’ bandwagon
I has All on vinyl. feels old man. : /
Ahhh, you didn’t miss a thing; I’m out of the loop and the Descendents-jocking could very well be at all time levels. Any consideration for ALL in that love? Is there some sort of SST revival going on?
Remember when Soundgarden was on SST?
lol. Honestly, SST, has one of the best, but SHITTIEST sounding/produced back catalogs.
Apparently Greg Ginn spends all his time playing w/ cats and gives zero fucks to remastering or selling anything.
D you should write a dissertation on ‘scene analysis’ (30% srs)
Allow me to put forth a theory here:
As the years go by and the internet makes trends both more easily identifiable and widespread (but also more mixed up and complex, that’s another story) can we expect that these “generations” shrink in duration?!
Following the math of 5 years per paradigm shift/revival, we’ll see a revival of Deathcore in 2018, and possibly we’re gonna see the Neon Years Pt. II: The Neonening in three years time or less. I just have a gut feeling that it will come a bit sooner, as the collective attention span of the younger generation grows ever shorter. If we see bands popping up in early 2016, that loudly and proudly proclaim to be “OLD SCHOOL FUCKING DEATHCORE” like Suiside Silence and the like, then colour me completely un-surprised.
“OLD SCHOOL FUCKING DEATHCORE”
Oh my god, why hasn’t somebody put this in varsity font on the back of their T-Shirt with a picture of the band vocalist in the middle of a pit?!
“Neon Years Pt. II: The Neonening”
Cannot happen soon enough.
So it like how 80′s hardcore bands used to make fun of the metal scene but then by mid the 90′s all the new hardcore bands were ripping off slayer?
the only thing about this is nu-metal influence is that it was never really a part of a grassroots ‘scene’. It was a trend that quickly become popular then fell off.
See: One Direction reviving the boy band trend
How many years until OM&M become really bad bar dadrock featuring gang vocals of “Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa, 949 ’til the END”?
It’s because nu metal peaked roughly ten years ago, when all of these kids were in their early teens and at their most suggestible. I’m the same age so I completely understand but I can also agree with the sentiment in this post. For me, these kids aren’t white trash enough to pull it off convincingly (see: Shifty Shellshock has nearly died numerous times from overdosing, DJ Lethal parties with Ezec, Austin Carlisle wrote a song about his mom. You do the math).
You’re right this is what got these guys into heavy music but they didnt care about death metal or hardcore in the first place.
rip crabcore :[

from lame to uber lame, gg off mice n man
Deez FIRST SONG OFF THE NEW AWAITED ALBUM songs with lyric videos r becomin super popular.
Lyric videos are becoming a big trend, and it makes me notice how lulzy and bad most of the band who release them’s lyrics are :(
I want to go back to a time when I never heard or thought about lyrics at all.
98% of metal bands should dispense of lyrics entirely. Srs.
Dance Gavin Dance pretty much already did, that’s a start.
Results of Jonny Craig’s drug addiction do not count.
Its mostly Jon Mess, but being on a shitton of heroine doesn’t hurt.
Sincerely cannot comprehend why these are so popular. The scrolling words make seem like a joke, like a parody movie trailer. #kidzthesedays
dude but I liked soulfly before they were cool
So you liked them at any point in history? I’ve NEVER been aware of Soulfly having a significant fanbase at all. I could totally be wrong though, They were a tad before my time. #feelsbabyman.
I used to liek them in like 2005 :(
soulfly – prophecy had deh fuxing nize breakdownz n some nice guitar wankery =D
I saw a few minutes of Soulfly’s show at a fest last weekend. Damn, Max done gone and got fat.
yup he sure did =/
hopefully he won’t grow to Dino Cazares level doe…
I understand why you might be butthurt about it, but at the same time DEM BLUNCE RIFFS! DAT BLAT WHICH I CANT POINT OUT BECAUSE I’M ON MY PHONE! Maybe it’s because i grew up the biggest slipknot fan ever (not as into them now but still dig them) but bounce riffs make me stoked, and as far as i’m concerned this new trend means a fuckton of the, so i back it hard

My main complaints with the nu-deathcore trend are:
a) aside from a couple bands like Korn most nu-metal bands were pretty shitty so there isn’t much in the original source material to steal from in the first place
b) I think any ‘[blank] revival’ trend is inherently boring in that it’s just a rehash of an older style for its own sake without really bringing anything new to the table like crabcore and deathcore did (whether you like either genre or not is beside the point)
I guess I should write a full post about this subject so everyone can accuse me of being a butthurt oldfag
I’d be interested in reading this, very much even.
Although I generally dislike Deathcore and Crabcore, it still stands that it marked the first time in what… 25 years(??) that something GENUINELY new was added to the genre, ie. the danceable techno stuff. For better or for worse it was still an expansion of the palette.
Exactly– I can totally see why someone might not like Attack Attack, but the fact of the matter is that what they did on their first album was very groundbreaking and it resonated with kids like whoa. Sad they turned into a crappy band who sound like they should open for Hinder :(
I remember IMNs losing their shit about how terrible Attack Attack was cause they used electronics and autotune. Now I have some metal friends that like the new album while I’m sitting here wishing they still used the electronics and silly song titles. That said IMNs will prolly just all over how awesome this OM&M song is because they all secretly loved Slipknot and don’t want to admit it.
Even though I didn’t like old Attack Attack, I still prefer it over what they’re doing now. I mean, at least the old stuff had some entertainment value for a dude like me. Now it’s just “meh…”
Nothing remarkable about it, neither good nor bad, just completely trivial.
^ this
If trends are created by stealing from two generations ago as you said above, where does originality come in? I don’t even like trancecore but when it first showed up there was really nothing anything like it. Are there some bros who just create something new and that picks up or do they also steal from something that I’m completely ignorant about?
I didn’t say that was the origin of all trends, I was commenting on how it is socially acceptable to copy from two generations in the past, but not one. Borrowing from the past is only one source of trend-spiration.
I hear Linkin Park vocals and Slipknot drumming copied almost 1 on 1.
dat BLEH!
Idk, they do sound like they’ve evolved (cringe), but it doesn’t sound like textbook “nu-metal” to me. I agree with the above comments that it’s much more tolerable than their earlier releases when they were basically just replicating old Attack Attack. I think they’re evolving (double-cringe) in the same vein as deathcore has in the past year or so.
Got overly butthurt over this, OM&M are (or were) one of my favorite bands. And I’ve never really liked numetal, besides Deftones I guess. Always thought those bands were just white trash wiggers doing songs about their dad/uncle/neighbour touching them.
“just white trash wiggers doing songs about their dad/uncle/neighbour touching them.”
Yep, sums it up perfectly, sadly enough.
Am 100% on board with this. BRB, JNCOs
Yes, JNCO’s and black parachute pants
BRB fortelling future, waiting for New Wave Of American Heavy Metal revival of 2014.
Initiate band that sounds like Lamb of God mixed with KSE with a twang of Mastodon and a handful of Throwdown.
look for the first wave of pioneering bands in this movement to debut in 2013. their peers will call them derivative laggards who are behind the times, but history will remember them as bold innovators.
10 years after the fact music nerds will talk about how they listened to them when they put out a 3 track demo in 2013.
needs more “spooky” clean guitar part shoehorned in the middle with the singer whisper-singing about how fucked up he is and he’s at his breaking point
R U Ross Robinson?
Wood see them on Ozzfest 2nd stage & buy their hemp-necklace @ the merch table/10
Fucking hemp necklaces. Dear lord.
hemp bdsm floggers are where it’s at these days
Actually I think they ripped off BMTH’s Suicide Season sound
Word, I hear that too. I loved that album so much when it came out. Soundtrack to every jailbest filled shitshow party I went to around that time. They bummed me out so much when they released their new one.
*jailbait
“Austin’s neck is so long and wide, and his head is so tiny, like a weird giraffe :(”
Giggled like school girl @ dat!
I used to date a girl that was technically a midget (but she was well proportioned, i.e., did not have a giant dwarf forehead) that loved to give head. Nicknamed her, “Microcephaly”. Kinda miss her :(…her tiny hands made my penis look huge. :)
ROTLMFAO!!!
nice =P
So pop punk and metalcore/deathcore are both aping trends from the late 90′s now? I see a future where this ” x revival” loop shrinks to the point where music no longer changes. I just hope it’s in one of the fun phases when that happens.
This is by far the best song I’ve heard from a popular scenecore band.
In b4 IMNs accept all the nu-metalcore bands ala accepting JFAC once they turned into generic death metal
Doubt that will happen. The connection to metalcore is still pretty strong, and they still have sceneish look. Plus, nu metal isn’t exactly popular amongst metal nerds. I’ll accept them, but I’m “not liek all the other metalfags”.
Or who knows, you’re pretty much always right about predicting alternative ppls group behavioral patterns.
This makes me sad :(
I didn’t like OM&M in the first place but I like nu metal even less. I don’t get why “attractive tumblrfamous tattoo’d dreamboats who slay scene poon” want to jock groce white trash music.
I think the whole “hard rock” thing, has a lot to do with the fact that now it’s cool to be a hipsterfaggot who doesn’t stick to the assigned genre defenitions. They’re srs artists, they’re not “crabcore” or “metalcore” or any of that immature scene bullshit, they’re not like everyone else, they’re just hard rock. They’re not in it for the money or the tumblrfame or the 16 year old pussy, they’re hard rock.
I predict that this dumb genre naming thing will be a major trend. Its already happening – The Acacia Strain shuns the “deathcore” label and says they’re “just heavy”. These fags are “Hard Rock”. Inb4 The Ghost Incide start referring to themselves as “punk” and Suisidechapel start calling themselves “heavy metal”
Boom
‘not liek teh other bands’
When I think of “hard rock”, I immediately think of just Sunset Strip hair-metal and NOTHING ELSE. Obv. ripping Motley Crue and that sort of thing is out there, I just don’t associate this band with it at all. To me it’s like calling Brutal Truth jazz-rock.
Though come to think of it, Nikki Sixx’s hairstyle was def. a huge influence.
This whole shift in bringing back music makes total sense, how Gothenburgcore bands basically copied the molo-deth (IE At The Gates, In Flames) that came out about 10 years before them. Although I’m too young to have been into Gothenburg Melo-Death when it was fresh, to my understanding it was never mainstream popular. SO WHAT GIVES?
personally I’m glad that this is happening, it’s already awesome that over got to hear asking alexandria on an advertisement on my local rock radio station for the mayhem fest!
it’ll be great,to go to shows at arenas with shinedown and of mice and men one day!
You’re telling me, Of Mice and Men ISN’T pop punk!>!?! I’m going to DISRESPECT SOMETHING AROUND ME!!
I’ll will avoid your surroundings.
Hell hath no fury like a suburbanite scorned :O
Anybody else expecting to hear dj scratching in the beginning? Also lol at the shut up breakdown at the end. Totally reminds me of one step closer by linkin park
Bleed by Soulfly ft. Fred Durst is pretty awesome. NO FUCKS GIVEN.
nice… slipknotcore =D
can’t wait to buy the cheap 5 to ten dollar lawn seats as i watchem w/ my binoculars at duh next mayhem/family values tour =]
im actually gonna go against the grain here and say that I <3 nu metal and that it was original (just like metalcore/deathcore was).. no fux given yall cuz it got me to " jump da fuck up" n mosh my preteen heart out =D
Could they have put less effort into that video clip?
Holy shit, it happened.
Nu-metal is coming back.
