SYWH Podcast 18: Eyal Levi of AUDIOHAMMER STUDIOS

Levi with his old-school guitar (only 7 strings lol what antique store did u find that thing in?!)

In case you haven’t picked up on it by now, there is a specific kind of person I love having on the podcast: super prolific and hardworking, with their hands in a lot of different projects that may or may not have anything to do with each other. People like BIG CHOCOLATE, DJ TWOSTACKS, and Todd Jones who are always working on something new and seem like they never rest.

When it comes to modern metalcore production, doesn’t get much more technically flawless than this DEMON HUNTER song that Eyal worked on

Eyal Levi is one of these people. He plays in the Century Media band DAATH, has toured and recorded with a few other bands, and writes a very insightful column on Metal Sucks. But I wanted to talk to him about his Real Job as one of the guise behind AUDIOHAMMER STUDIOS. You may know them for their work with Tumblrfamous bands like DEMON HUNTER, JOB FOR A COWBOY, CHELSEA GRIN, WHITECHAPEL, AUGUST BURNS RED among many, many others, and I thought it would be cool to hear more about how things work at the elite level of the studio business.

Follow him on Twatter, check out AUDIOHAMMER’s work and be prepared to geek out about compressors and plugins!

Surprised that you’d include such and IMN magnet.

I’ll check it out… as someone who works at a (non-elite level) of the studio business, it’s relevant to my interests.

  2. Zoloft says:

inb4 butthurt overload over the presence of an IMN idol

  3. yup says:

hopefully this post doesn’t disappear again when i refresh the page, you sneaky basterd

  4. Really, really good podcast (srs). Eyal seems like a good dude, and the whole deal with music biz and recording stuff is very informative. Best podcast so far IMO.

  5. walter the einstein frog says:

before i listened to this i was like, oh god this is gonna be awful, but it wars really awesome. I also dropped out of berklee ASAP first semester, what a cesspool that place is.

my problem with that style of recording is that it just doesn’t work for every band, sounds good for more techy metal stuff, but i think simpler bands like immure, acacia strain etc would be better served by a more raw recording.

  6. nac says:

Really enjoyed this and the one with Chuck BB. Nice to get some insight from successful creative professionals.

  7. Void Eater says:

Proud of u for conquering your fear of metal. Will listen… Sometime…

  8. ENDER says:

Hay Sarge, do me a favor. Scroll to the top of the page and look at that picture of him with his guitar. Now count the Machine Heads on the Headstock. How many did you get? 6?? Now look at the bottom of the guitar where the strings cross the bridge and go into the body. Count all the little white holes. what did you get? SIX AGAIN!?
Now add both of your totals together
    then divide by 2.
    Now fix your typo
    Pls rspnd
    be safe

  9. Lou says:

Really good interview! Eyal seems really chill and humble. SRS Q, Sarge do you talk like this in business arena (ie. lots of like, umm, sooo) and does it hold you back do you think?

    • Sergeant D says:

I’m not sure, but I have been thinking about that a lot lately. I don’t think so, or at least I hope not… but it’s fucking hard to listen to on the podcasts and it has definitely made me super self-conscious about it IRL. Like almost to the point of having crippling anxiety every time I open my mouth (srs), which makes it way worse. I don’t think I have ever had this problem in the past but I’m currently really, really freaked out about it and it’s honestly a huge source of stress for me lately. Makes me want to hide under a rock.

      • Sergeant D says:

Like, I have always thought of myself as a good verbal communicator, but when I listen to these podcasts I hear the exact opposite. I don’t know if it’s because I try too hard when I know I’m recording or what, but I fucking hate it and it’s driving me crazy and making me doubt myself a lot. Which sucks, but if it’s an issue for me I guess it’s better to know about it than not so I can try to correct it.

      • jm6g90 says:

chillout brah no-one likes to hear their own (recorded) voice

        • Lou says:

          ^^^ This times a billion

Not hating at all Sarge, I’ve been trying to weed sentence fillers out of my speech too so I can do well in an interview and actually get one of these so called real jobs.

  10. Nightshift says:

When I lived in Atlanta I knew a guy who had been in Daath. Have never listened to this band.
