New Jamz???: N A T I V E S

“Sunglasses, a dress shirt, and skinny shorts good for everyone? Yeah, buttoned all the way to the top looks and feels great, trust me.”

You ever get into a new band’s music, but worry about whether or not they’ll be able to deliver long term? That’s how I feel about this band Natives, who first off have a poor name choice, making them have to use ‘Follow Natives’ as the name for their Facebook, website, twitter, store, like everything. Wouldn’t they just use that as their name? Or pick a more standing-outish name? There are tons of plural nouns that haven’t really been touched upon, and adjectives are great, and I’m still thinking famous people’s names is gonna catch on soon, but whatever, their music is still pretty sweet.

This is their first single, and the video is fun as fuck. Chill hangs at the beach, some mini-golf thrown in, bike rides, throwing stuff and being stoked on it, and a solid beach bonfire. Overall its a fun ass summer day with your bros, and it goes well with the catchy song. I don’t know what island they’re talking about, but the chorus is gold, love British accents singing, and I am feeling it.

But then there are some lame things holding back the fun levels, mainly the fact that the whole video looks instagram’d, and the grainy 60′s-esque effect every once in a while, plus there are no babes, like not even one. Like they had to have had shots with cute girls in the background just by accident that they purposely cut. Overall I feel like they’re going for the tumblrgirl audience, when they’re really close to having like One Direction type appeal, but for like twenty year old British kids. I’m gonna go ahead and blame bearded bro and the dude with the alt-haircut, betting their post-punk band broke up right before they started this band, and they still want to be taken all ‘seriously’.

This is their only other song I think, and its not as good as the fun summer one, but its not like a bad first song for a band to release. Its their ‘heavier’ one, probably good to open shows, and the whoah’s definitely keep me interested. If this was on an album I wouldn’t skip it, but I wouldn’t be playing it on repeat either, nah mean? But with only two songs I don’t know what path they’re heading down, it could be funner and poppier, or more tr00 and lame, with low budget performance videos and blog posts calling out ‘fake’ bands :/

Engraved USB’s? Cool innovation or one step above being as lame as cassettes???

So yeah, I’m torn. On the one hand they write some pretty cool music, but it may be too close to call on whether or not they’re becoming a sweet power pop band or a really lame sad boring serious rock band. I would wear that shirt tho, via not looking like a band shirt, but preordering for a single is pretty lame, especially paying extra for a USB when they could just email all that stuff to you. How do they have enough money to make a little documentary too? these dudes must be loaded. I don’t know if they’ve got an album done and are releasing a song at a time, or recording a song at a time, or only doing singles forever, but I am hesitantly excited for whatever they put out next. Got high hopes but they may easily get dashed, so I’m calling them the Michael Beasley of British pop bands for now, just gonna wait and see if that potential is reached. Maybe its cause they’re British.

Is it cause they’re British? Is Natives gonna release sweet summer jams or lame winter brooding shit? Shouldn’t they change their name before its too late, or is it already too late? Maybe there just aren’t that many babes in Britain, that one Direction video had like what, three? didn’t pay attention that much. Hit em up on facebook and tell them to keep the fun jams alive!

  4. NATIVES is just “Not Advised” with a new name. They changed the name early this year. So if your lookin for where they’ll go in the future, check out their past! Pretty sweet pop punk! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sueroAfSu9E #Swerve!

lol i dress like that (srs)
I watched the first video when it came out a couple of days ago but I thought “the fact that the whole video looks instagram’d, and the grainy 60′s-esque effect every once in a while” was a smart marketing choice. Realy into that song !
They kinda remind me of that band kids in glass houses, their first album (smart casual) was great, its rare when every song on a power pop album is good, theur later stuff is not as good

I’m well chuffed to see britrock get attention on SYWH. Yeah they used to be a pop punk band called Not Advised but changed their name to Natives and played more power pop 2.0, indie rock inspired music. They changed it because they thought Not Advised was too juvenile. But not like they’re a srs band they just wanted to be something else, but they should still absorb their old NA songs into their debut album.

  7. Gotta do that [youtube (link)] format for wordpress, doe! It’ll pop up automatically.

I’m from Indiana right around where those guys are from, so you know, I’ve heard of them and seen em a couple times. At first glance of the name I thought this was their new video, but then I was like ‘Whaaaaat, there is actual fun being had here!’ which led me to further research.
