I recently went to a show that had Schoolboy Q and a bunch of local acts that I have never heard of. The reason I was planning on spending too much money on double whiskey cokes was purely for the Los Angeles TDE headliner that I cannot get enough of lately. If you haven’t listened to Habits and Contradictions you are missing out on one of the most flawless records to come out in 2012. Anyway, I had no idea what to expect from these small text on the flyer performers but good lord was I in for a treat.

One of them that really impressed me was A.r.k The God MC. Coming from the one and only Screwston, she brings an extremely refreshing style to the world of female rappers. No over the top outfits or try hard sexual lyrics. Just straight to the point and she owns it. In this video she comes out and does a freestyle and then merges into one of her songs called Celefuckinbration. Not really sure if it’s actually her birthday but she goes hard and has me convinced. Shout out to the only white dude at 7:38! When she’s off stage you can catch her hanging out in the crowd being super friendly. “Y’all need to get on that love shit” at 11:56 says it all. Hopefully Tyga’s label G.E.D that currently has her signed will take her places!

Here is a group that has been getting a lot of hype in Triple D with their latest release that came out recently, “When Pigs Fly.” Picnic Tyme produced solid bangers that work for your vodka in the Sonic slushy moments, or for those times when you’re just trying to smoke with your OTW girlfriend and cuddle. I guess I need to hang out in Oak Cliff more to understand the hard knock life but regardless, I really like what they did with this song. My only complaint is that they like to use the hash tag #ADdHoe. Please drop the e silly boys.

Backed! Southern Rap is rlly hard for me to get into unless it’s filtered through the lens of stuff I’m more familiar with. Dig the chopped style fo’ sho’, just prefer it so much more when it’s from rappers elsewhere (Drake sampling a DJ Screw song for HYFR) OR rappers from Tejas dat could come from anywhere else (See: Kirko Bangz).
