SYWH Podcast 22: Brian from XIBALBA

If you like hardcore, you are probably already a big fan of XIBALBA, whose new album ‘Hasta La Muerte’ is creating a moshalepsy epidemic from coast to coast. We caught up with guitarist Brian Ortiz, who sadly had to stay home and work while the rest of the band was on tour, to talk about the direction of the new record, being on Southern Lord, how dumb it is when people compare them to DISEMBODIED, and most importantly if white kids will ever start jocking Sureno rap.

One of the downsides to being on a label like Southern Lord is that turds like Anthony Fontano will discover your band and makes things really awkward with horrifingly ghey reviews like this one :( See also this Pitchfork review that calls them ‘youth crew.’

Brian’s homie from high school ESE DEMON, who is here to let you motherfuckers know what it means to blast a snitch

Hit up XIBALBA on Facebook, follow Brian on Twitter, and tell them SYWH sent you!

I would appreciate a Xibalba is for lovers shirt. Does that exist? I will listen to this on my way today. fuck yeah commutes!

  2. steez Messiah says:

Fagtano’s shirt has a lot of truth to it.

  3. Kris says:

Saw Xibalba with Alpha and Omega, The Beautiful ones, and Power Trip last night. One of the funnest shows I’ve been too in a long time.

Also lol @ at the girl who claims Xibalba and A&O ‘sexually assaulting’ her in Vancouver. Sooo much bullshit.

  4. cmoney says:

Honestly, don’t really listen to new bands a whole lot cuz I’m an old fart no fun 9-5 sellout. But when SYWH had a post about their new TRACK before the album DROPPED, I nearly shit my pants. They are so good it’s scary.

I haven’t been to a hardcore show in years, but I might have to go about 2 hours out of my way after work next week to catch them. Ugh it’s in such a shitty place, but XIBALBA!

  5. demcats says:

Every time the Needledrop reviews anything remotely heavy, my anus hole quivers with buttpain. That part when he speaks ill of breakdowns (“i ttly kno wat im talking about guys all my friends saw Hatbread when i was 10″) and then praises the “noise” on the album = suisiding self.

  6. cmoney says:

OK Sergeant D sounds like you’re giving mad dome while Brian is talking. Back off that mic bro.

    • Sergeant D says:

Again everybody is far more interested in the audio production than the content of the podcast itself. Baffling.

      • Sergeant D says:

I’m seriously going to stop doing these if people don’t quit bitching about the fucking audio.

        • cmoney says:

          I has a sad :(

This is the first one I’m listening to. Didn’t know there was a history of bitching about it and that you were super sensitive about it. I’m enjoying it.

It’s actually fine now, it just started out sounding like you were suckin’ on a Werther’s OG early on.

        • Kris says:

Don’t let the h8ers get u down Serg!!

Srsly though, these podcasts may be the best part of SYWH, please don’t stop.

          • Sergeant D says:

I totally recognize that the audio quality is not the best, but is that really a big fucking deal to people who listen to the kind of music SYWH covers??

            • (curvedEdgeCrusty) says:

“NO TOP NOTCH PRODUCTION VALUES = NOT PODCAST”
brb, dropping needle on shitty Hardcore 7″ demo recorded in basement on Tascam 4 track

              • Latinoheat!!! says:

in be4 swaggage of ” I <3 HATERS" shirts becomes popular again ;-D

                • nu♘♘tej says:

You did not sound gay-PNW at all this time, very relaxed, composed & prepared, no verbal crutches or heavy breathing/typing/eating/skype-notification sounds. A+ for a real interview with someone currently relevant who actually has something interesting to say

        • I speak for the trees says:

it sounded like you had a dick on the side man. Back up from the mic.

  7. RJG says:

D, not sure if you’ve ever been awared to this before but Make Move was dropping the latino mosh on LA/OC/IE like 8 years ago. Big Brian and all the Xibalba dudes for sure were moshing at Chain/Studio S/Showcase and so was I.

  8. Kris says:

Yeah it’s pretty stupid. For how good of content these interviews have, I don’t see why anyone gives a fuck as long as it is listenable.

  9. I kinda liked Fagtano’s review; maybe I’m a filth :(

    • InsecureGorulla says:

      i like fantano’s videos too :(

feels bad being a groce hipster who likes fun music too

    • (curvedEdgeCrusty) says:

BackTardio…but my excuse for not finding Faghornio’s review so filth this time is that I watched it after listening to Ese Demon…wuz awful ghey. Fav quote: “They are not humble…when it comes to the rumble!”

Good podcast, Serge…enjoyed much. So he couldn’t tour cuz of work? Am sad 4 him (in band = no $$$) :(

    • Nightshift says:

He’s a fucking tool (Shibalba?) but I pretty much agree about endless breakdowns being redundant and boring. But I think Khanate is boring as fuck too.

      • Jek Porkins says:

This isn’t how its pronounced? Have I been saying it wrong this whole time?

All I know about Mayan culture is from Pitfall for Sega Genesis :/

  10. Anonymous says:

So if Xibalba is youth crew, does that mean that Lifetime is beatdown/moshcore? lol @ u pitchfork

    ANYWAYS, good interview.

  11. TheEpicOfGilgamosh says:

This podcast makes me feel like I haven’t really experienced life (via living somewhere that isn’t on the west coast).

    • Sergeant D says:

Sad 4 u :( but you are correct.

    • Bronson says:

It’s okay dude, I’m a native of California, and I ended up moving to the South East when I was 17. So basically, I got a taste of what living in the OC was like just prior to being whisked off. I like where I am fine now, but every once in a while I still dream about what it would be like to go back (especially now that I’d be able to drive and do whatever I want)…

  12. Nightshift says:

Kirk Windstein from Crowbar was in Shell Shock which was a hardcore band with Jimmy Bower. Him, Gary Mader, Jimmy Bower, Pepper Keenan, Mike Williams and the rest of those guys were in the hardcore punk scene in New Orleans in the 80s, but it was obviously a seedy strung out drunken fuck up scene rather than some suburban east coast youth crew or TUFFGUI thing.

  13. roflzbiscuitz says:

I can’t handle that needledrop guy. His fggtry is too strong and I’m afraid it will leap out and latch on to my face.

  14. richard brunelle says:

the real sin of that p4k review is he basically cribbed sarge’s legit insights (old morbid angel worship, 909 scene being a thing, etc) and buried the lede

  15. the shape of Mudd Jeans to come says:

Best podcast yet, Serg! Thank u 4 realizing me 2 the bold world of sureno rap.

  16. fuzzyxpickles says:

HIs review was actually pretty good :/

  17. Jake says:

Haha you and that mexi rap man, first you mention it to the dude from Goliath and now Xibalba are you hopping that so cal’s most trending death metal/hardcore bands are going to start repping this shit?

  18. Adam says:

    A+++++ podcast back tard

  19. SCOfaSho says:

I lol’d irl at “so loud you can’t turn it down”. His problem is really that he talks about records like they’re food.

  20. Anonymous says:

that hawthorne heights rip is fucking hilarious. where is it from?

  21. I also like the fish says:

You sound kind of sad sarge.
    Praying 4 u.

  22. Purrrgz says:

Got kinda butthurt by the Pitchfork ‘review’ – too much douche in the monitors.

  23. fuzz says:

Reading the comments on Fagtano’s video. lol @ how people are requesting that he review a Swans album next

  24. YungXanax says:

I pointed out that fagtanos fans would get destroyed at a show and he got buttmad. Whatevs

  25. Manuwar says:

Xibalba Reminds me of The Road to el Dorado. TO XIBALBAAAAA!!!!!1!

  26. roger_camden says:

Good conversation. Seems like a chill dude.
I like the new intro, too.

  27. the_real_korben_dallas says:

Haven’t listened to this podcast yet, but I really like the Ese Demon track.

What does this mean and where can I find more of this.
