REGGAETON: An introductory course

Ques la que hay cabrones?? I am Manuwar and I’m here to teach you the song of my people: REGGEATON, Puerto Rico’s greatest (or worst, depending on who you ask) cultural export. Musically, reggeaton is similar to hip-hop and dancehall, featuring rapped vocals, a danceable, repetitive beat known as dem bow and unintentionally hilarious, misogynist lyrics. Reggaeton has been popular in Puerto Rico since atleast the mid-90s and was mostly associated with scumbags, criminals, drug-addicts. Reggaeton is also known for its fans, known as cacos (see also “wigger”, “hood”, “chav”). It is also known for its dancing style known as perreo, which is basically grinding and has been very controversial. Posibly due to backlash and wanting to dissasociate themselves with reggaeton’s crass image, in the last few years artists stopped being ignant and turned to religion, started fusing reggaeton with other latin genres like bachata, merengue and salsa and pop and called it “urbal latin” or something like that, or went full retard/political/social justice league (Calle 13). Even though tr00 reggaeton is not as popular as it once was in the mainstream Puerto Rican media, here are some of my favorite songs if you’re interested in this trend of brown foolishness:

While I never liked DY, he pretty much brought reggaeton to the American mainstream so it deserves its credit

Wisin y Yandel are my favorite mainstream reggaeton artists, and choosing which song to post was hard as fuck. Also, they are one of the few performers still relevant today

A more recent song that while not tr00 reggaeton, this song is super fun and you may recognize it as the song that plays during the vault-opening scene in Fast Five <3

This song was the shit when I was in 5th grade

Now thats what I call brown foolishness! note that the video takes place @ Universal Studios in Florida. I think Baby Rasta turned Christian after being shot or something

TW: Not recommended for those suffering from a severe case of brown fever. Jamsha is an artist that performs in an old-school style. He’s not bad, but sometimes I feel his videos are too zany for me :(

The lyrics to this song can only be described as heartfelt poetry. The most exquisite and and beautiful of the genre, on par with the works of Miguel De Cervantes and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. While difficult to translate to your banal, mediocre English language, here’s the best I could do:

“Fucking Whore, fucking slut, you spend all day tasting cock, fucks at parties, fucks in the woods, fucks in your car and anywhere she can. Piss on the pussy, spit on the mouth,  of that fucking bitch that ain’t worth nothing”

ALL MY FEELS

And that was my little intro to reggeaton, a genre that is loved and hated in equal measures. hope you guise enjoyed it <3

Do you love or hate reggaeton? Are newyoricans the worst? Do you think reggeaton is terrible but its worth it cuz of perreo? What do you think about “urban latin music”?

Also, if you can understand the lyrics you will get how awesome/hilarious the songs by that dude are.

  5. Void Eater says:

Holy shit that Gasolina song. My 8th grade english teacher used to play it in class and the 13 year old girls would do slutty dances to it which made my boner super happy.

  6. VyceVictus says:

Round of golf claps; nice work bro! Entertaining and educational.
That Jamsha cat is off the chain and the video is berserk. And DAT LISMA.

  7. Negrodamus says:

    A+++ post

As a guy who grew up in south florida with a severe case of brown fever, reggaeton will always hold a special place in my heart <3

    • Latinoheat!! says:

wish i lived in miami/SoFla…. dat cuban/carribean/central american accents on bishes be giving me boners!!

      • Midas Welby says:

Is that breed of latinas sexier than the ones found in SoCal? I live in Atlantic Canada where there are basically no latin people so the Spanish-speaking girls here (who would be the dregs/castoffs anywhere else) can command alpha-tention way above their station.

      • toxi cholocaust420 says:

You won’t be wishing you live here when you actually step foot here haha Other than the ladies and the cheap but good weed, I’d say So Fla is pretty eh. But it’s probably cause I get hurt in the butt when cool tours don’t come here but hit Georgia. :(

  8. Anonymous says:

    No Tego Calderon, Not reggaeton!

  9. B. Edge says:

Um . . . . where is Latinoheat to weigh in on this pressing issue?

  10. inb4skillz says:

I actually don’t hate reggaeton, but my dads side of my family would disown me if I listened to it (via Mexicans hating Puerto Ricans and vise versa) on the other hand I don’t talk to them much anyway so vamanos de parranda!

  11. refusetodie says:

I’m Latino and was living in Miami right at the point where reggaeton started to cross over stateside (with Miami probably being the unrivaled entry point other than perhaps by New York). GOOD POST, BACKED HARD.

No love for Hector “El Father” (or “El Bambino” if you’re nasty)? Dude had some pretty sick/ignorant club jams back in the day about smashing dames including one with a lyric about breaking a girl’s ass (or more than one)

  12. Manuwar says:

I cant please everyone brah :(

  13. Sergeant D says:

i am lukewarm on reggaeton in terms of the music itself but the videos are almost always full of incredibly hot brown girls who are not wearing very many clothes. i consider myself a fan of the genre based on this aspect alone.

    • TLDR says:

^^^THIS. Could not get into the music in any way but wanted to thank the OP for posting videos of hot latinas in revealing attire.

Would stand around awkwardly at a party my co workers convinced me to go to while people dance to this music/10

would jack off to the images saved in my head of the 7/10 girls I’m only used to seeing in scrubs/10

  14. no the noise or playero vids>????

  15. nutkin says:

srsly appreciate these posts that introduce me to new genres of music i wouldn’t otherwise be giving the time of day. just like most of the stuff in the jerkin post, a lot of the songs here make me want to get up and dance (which i’ll refrain from doing, since i have all the rhythm and skills of courtney cox in that springsteen video). thank you manuwar for broadening my musical horizons.

    • TLDR says:

i have all the rhythm and skills of courtney cox in that springsteen video

As a fellow white person I can relate.

      • Latinoheat!! says:

the whitey-can’t-dance-syndrome can be easily solved by an easy dosage of alcohol…

I can’t tell you how many gueras let loose after a few shots or mixed drinks ;-D n of course my smoothness to “teach them spanish” n salsa, bachata, merengue, insert latin music stereotype here =P

I can’t dance for shit but i my NFG attitude just makes me follow wutever the people around me are doing lol…

  16. Rocks says:

    Bachata > Reggaeton

    http://youtu.be/5_fMuMMCUYI

But not going to lie, either just makes me want to bone 24/7

  17. Great post…of course being latino implies that we know more than the average gringo about this but I think it serves its purpose as an introductory lesson to perreo. Even though is almost 10 years too late, is never too late to have some white bishes grinding on your cock.
I am currently living in Chile for work and let me say, Jamsha is really big within the hipster/artsy hip hop scene here…kinda the reggaeton Tyler The Creator.

Do ricans use the word “culiar” for effing as well?

  18. chololol says:

I feel like I should be working on a corridos intro course for the mexi’s here and pick up latinoheats slack

      • Latinoheat!! says:

        sorry brahs…

i got dem nursing school blues over here…. got an exam every week practically…. you wood think there wood be more brown peepz on the net since we have babies like its armageddon tomorrow!!….

        mirin’ dat name chololol handle…. you visit lascalles.net n brownpride.com too? >=D

  19. Jonnyfilth says:

    This shit is great!
A genre entirely consisting of brown foolishness, lyrics about sex, and fuckloads of hot brown bishes = Backed hard. Also it seems like making these music vids would be the most fun thing ever

  20. Martin Regnen says:

Awesome post! One of my signers just came back from a month in Cuba, and brought back a ton of mp3s of their own local imitation of reggaeton. It’s kinda low-tech and low-budget, though the lyrics seem less scummy. She said entire families listen to that stuff together, grandmas and little kids and all. Here’s one of the most popular tracks there now:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3aXpximkz4

Reggaeton is not really huge in Eastern Europe, except of course “Danza Kuduro” which was the biggest hit for months before “Ai se eu te pego” came along, but DJs spin it a lot at Latin or dancehall nights. I do some Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen covers live that are great for getting the crowd dancing. Need to do more… working on Franco el Gorila’s “Nobody like you” now. “Chike bum chike what what chike bum bum” might be the greatest line of lyrics ever written.

  21. zunathustra says:

i was already won over on this post once i saw this still in the rakata video http://i.imgur.com/4lBcA.jpg

  22. WhtH8Grl says:

Me encanta reggaeton. Mis favoritos estan Daddy Yankee y Hector El Father y Wisin Y Yandel. Me gustan tambien Los Benjamins y Aventura (bachata). LOLz. For serious on the music; (Estoy tomando la clase de espanol…=P)

  23. dnlg88 says:

Here in Venezuela reggaeton is a big fucking deal, it’s like the equivalent of hip hop we never had at parties so it was much needed, I don’t have any problem with reggaeton if I’m at a party being dumb with girls, but when I’m drinking and just talking with friends I can’t deal with the reggaeton :(

  24. go to dallas and take a left says:

I seriously hope there is a post on cumbia villera soon

Sure I can get the brown-fever-ish, “exotic dry-humping” appeal this shit can have, but currently living in Bogota, Colombia [shit's ubiquitous down here] I can tell you being subject to it blasting everywhere all fucking day isn’t funny. Now my tolerance threshold to it is limited to the “social convention” [ie, partying n stuff]
I’d like to see that post on cumbia villera though, given that the line between ironically enjoying and actually loving it is pretty blurry.
Greetings from the Third World Midwest.
