As regular readers will know, I always say that I am basically a 16 year-old girl at heart– this is why I love FOREVER THE SICKEST KIDS and Tumblr. This is only partly true: a big part of me is also a 30 year-old white woman, which explains why I love things like Lexus SUVs and Panera. It is also the most likely reason that my favorite genre of movies is romantic comedies (srs). It’s true: I am a huge pussy and 75% of my Netflix queue is rom coms (also, I love cocks).
While it is correct that I am a huge pussy who likes rom coms because they are sweet and optimistic, the genre deserves some credit for having some genuinely insightful movies that are much more meaningful and moving than those gay indie movies that try way too hard to be meaningful and moving. In this post I will list a few of the romantic comedies that ‘rly mean a lot 2 me and got me thru hard times,’ please share yours too!
You really can’t go wrong with anything involving Ryan Reynolds, with “Just Friends” being the highlight of his career imo. If you are a fan of the ‘constantly squirming in your seat out of vicarious embarrassment’ school of comedy then you will love this film. 5/5 stars
You might think that Hugh Grant is just some washed up dude that your flabby aunt in her late 30s swoons over, but think again. He is not only an s-rank scumbag, but FUCKING HILARIOUS. Don’t let the overly sweet trailers fool you, this nigga is a comedy genius– “Music And Lyrics” is his best imo, but I even recommend the Bridget Jones movies.
That feel when a movie for 30 year-old women speaks to you more than anything has in years :( Srs doe, if you are in that phase of your life where you feel like you should have your shit together but can’t seem to make it happen, this movie will feel like it was transcribed straight from your brain– honestly one of the most touching and insightful movies I’ve ever seen. Can we also talk about how incredibly wifeable/hot/hnggggggggggg Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph are? I don’t think I have ever seen a movie that gave me more amazing feels in my weiner than this one, I guess I have a thing for funny girls who are 7/10 in the face??
“Role Models” is a movie about a guy who gets dumped by his fiancee for being an uptight, negative asshole who works too much and is no fun to be around. I watched this while sitting next to my ex, who had just dumped me after 8 years for all the same reasons, and after about 15 minutes I had to turn to her and say “Well this one hits a little too close to home” just to defuse the mega-awkwardness (note: it didn’t help). The coffee shop scene still makes me cringe because it is such a good example of how I used to be and why being a jerky IMN-like snob is so poisonous to your happiness. Also contains one of my favorite scenes of all time in which Seann William Scott (<3 u bro) explains KISS by saying “The love gun is his dick!”
If Mila Kunis isn’t reason enough to see “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” then at least watch it for Jason Segal’s portrayal of the ultimate manchild/beta fggt so you have a blueprint for how not to act. This also came out right about when I had gotten dumped, and I’m pretty sure I might have made a lot of the same embarrassing, entry-level mistakes as he did if it wasn’t for this movie. THANK U BASED JUDD
Are you also gay for rom coms?? What are your favorites? Should I go really really deep and do in-depth filmographies of Kate Hudson and Luke Wilson??? Or dive fully into the rabbit hole, past the point of no return into the sub-subgenre of wedding comedies aka KATHERINEHEIGELCORE???

I saw “The Five Year Engagement” last night with a bish. Jason Segel is fucking awesome at romcoms, that movie was hilarious and had lots of surprise lulz. Highly recommend.
Also The Ugly Truth was fucking sweet Katherineheiglcore, Gerard Butler is a pretty good scumbag.
Role Models and Forgetting Sarah Marshall are two of my favourite movies ever (srs)
Alison Brie with a British accent, all my mmmmmm’s.
Not as solid as Forgetting Sarah Marshall but still mad cute.
I definitely almost included The Ugly Truth but didn’t want to make this even more TLDR– great movie! I also crush hard on Katherine Heigel
Oh and dude – Friends With Benefits! Mila Kunis and JT so fucking good.
Honorable mentions go to Wedding Crashers and Crazy Stupid Love.
lololol KatherineHeiglcore
Just Friends, Role Models and Forgetting Sarah Marshall are three of my fave movies and I had no idea they would be considered fggty rom coms (with the exception of Just Friends I guess..)
Will try Music and Lyrics but I fear Hugh Grant is just too British for me.
U think Maya Rudolph face = 7/10???
Brah, solid 4/10 there. She seems fun doe
actually she is like 9/10 in the face to me (srs).
BROWN FEVER STRIKES AGAIN
She’s half-black dude, no latin. I’d friendzone it.
aka OTW aka brown
She was in her heyday for sure, like late 90s SNL or whatever. But she hasn’t aged so well. She still rules.
FSM is amazing. I watched it more than once. And Bridesmaids ditto <3 u so much kristen
YES, FSM, srsly that movie helped me through what has been the most humiliating and emotionally crippling breakup of my life so far. <3 u segal and judd
HNNNGGGG KRISTEN WIIG. also huge mancrush on Ryan Reynolds.
>tfw when filth of gay
fav type of movie.
“Romancing the Goddess”
giggled
ive watched bridesmaids more then any other movie ever, i’ve never even been to a wedding before, i just love it so much :(
1) For me rom coms are like pizza- consuming one probably isn’t going to be an incredible mind blowing experience that will change your life, but it will almost certainly be enjoyable and fun and you probably won’t come out saying “well that was a big waste of my fucking time”. And when it is really really good, you will remember it.
2) The Five Year Engagement- This is the best rom com I’ve seen in a long time. It has a lot of super insightful stuff about having to make sacrifices for your S/O and the consequences thereof, and how sometimes you just have to put your life on hold while your partner does their shit that they need to do. Really strong performances from everyone except for Emily Blunt is not funny and cannot act (although super fucking hot).
3) Friends With Benefits- A great deconstruction of the rom com genre without being wanky. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are both really funny.
4) Priceless- Probably my fav rom com, its a French movie with Audrey Tautou who is 10/10 hot . Its very sweet and optimistic, and despite the fact it is French its not painfully unfunny like all other French comedy or wanky/artfag because it is mainstream.
5) Please do not say ‘nigga’ in your articles its really lame
I disagree with point #5, i am a white suburban jew so saying nigga/hearing rappers say nigga is relevant to my interests
Emily Blunt is funny and can act, AS WELL as giving me a wedding-bells-shaped boner.
Would tongue bathe Bruce Vilanch for the chance to see her across a room and be too embarrassed to say hi/10
Heavily disagree with 4 and 5. 5 because like the Jew above I love hearing nigga at the right moment. 4 because French women are despicable to the core + nobody who considers smoking attractive/glam can reach 10/10 status. And wait, Audrey TooToo, isn’t that the one from DaVinchey Code/Amelie? TEN OUT OF TEN?! Nigga, you trippin.
audrey tootoo lololol
Audrey Tautou is Amele, right? I’m unashamed to call that one of my top 5 movies. She is lovely. I will def check out Priceless.
I love Judd Apatow movies but sometimes I feel like his target audience fall asleep toward the end because they seem to absorb all the ‘BEING A “BETA MANCHILD IS ACTUALLY THE MOST AWESOME THING YOU CAN BE’ themes and reject all the ‘YOU NEED TO GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER YOU LAZY ASSHOLE’ moralizing that usually happens in the films’ third act.
Still, FSM is one of my favorite films of all time, and I can always count on 40yr old Virgin to help tide me over for a sleepy weekend. It’s just so lovely and perfect :)
Also the first like 90 mins of Funny People is the most gut-wrenching shit ever via pure Adam Sandler self-loathing, and then it becomes all weird and rom-commy and generic :/
Snot technically a rom-com, but what does everyone think of Scott Pilgrim? I love how betamales actually project themselves into the protagonists situation and glorify their supreme shitiness. It’s such a fucking amazingly made film though, so much love in every frame plus Mary Elizabeth Winsteads’ ass in that one scene even though she’s playing a groce artschool bish :/
IMO the problem with Funny People was that it was 45 minutes too long because he has that completely unnecessary part where he tries to get back together with the girl. The other problem is that Eric Bana was hilarious and the best part of that movie, but he only appeared in the unnecessary part!
@Walker – Backed
Eric Bana is one of the few good aussie actors who can make anything funny
I feel like his target audience fall asleep toward the end
Exactly– the whole point of his movies is to show how pathetic and disgusting that kind of behavior is, not to endorse it. Not sure they are grown up enough to catch that part, tho. Or maybe just ate too many pot brownies before they went to the theater.
No use for Scott Pilgrim simply because of Michael Cera. My reaction is like the Street Fighter announcer screaming “BUTT HURRRT!” instead of “K OOOOOOOOO!”
Never saw the movie (via trying to cut down on rageahol) but the video game is REALLY good
Saw footage and would love to play it. Love that retrogaming shit (don’t even say it…) plus the currency is Canadian ones and twos. I gotta get up on this game.
dude there is no need to be defensive THIS IS A SAFE SPACE.

I saw Scott Pilgrim recently, spent whole time yelling at the screen because his character was a piece of shit loser and kept getting hot women. Made no sense at all so I was angry at that movie, despite interesting premise and well done effects/storyline/Home Alone Bro’s sassy gay brother.
It is what happens when bookish nerds from the westcountry grow up to direct films.
I am from the same area (if you have seen HOT FUZZ that is set not far) and am basically the same guy without the success etc.
Surprised you managed to finish that movie. I couldn’t get past 15 minutes of it. Just thinking of all the annoying assholes that like that movie and treat Scott as a tr00 hero makes me sick to the stomach.
Sorry for being so unposi bros.
I was legit angry, but it was good besides casting him (and Aubrey Plaza who’s character was pointless anyway).
If they would’ve had a likeable chill dude in the role, him being a loser who eventually figures out to get his shit together for this girl would have been better. But Cera just came off as an easily hatable little fggt. If only Ryan Reynolds was still young…
I totally feel you man. Like, the geekyness of the movie would have been much more tolerable to a non-geek such as myself had there been any indication that Cera would get his shit together and not be a total faggot.
Waste of a good concept, movie could legit have been super sweet.
I was like that wen I saw the movie, the only thing they got right is when the vegan guy says “we vegans are better than other people”
All that vegan stuff was perfect. Really good movie with a lot of great scenes and ideas, the main character was just too much of a little bitch for me to really like it.
i saw it in a near-empty theatre and got shushed by teenage girls because i kept sighing loudly at how irritating it was. contemplated walking out. ate too much popcorn and fell asleep instead. felt like there was something fundamentally wrong with me because everyone at the time was going on about what a great movie it was.
Love Scott Pilgrim via it being a pretty good representation of the comics and Edgar Wright being all-round great. Winstead though, fucking hell. Would punch my own cat in the head repeatedly if it meant I was able to touch her face then apologise profusely afterwards/10.
Watched Role Models for the second time the other day, realised I actually really enjoy it. It’s the right level of “you are a dick stop being a dick” for me to enjoy.
Surprised to not see any mention of Definitely, Maybe. Features Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin (the girl from Little Miss Sunshine) and a whole load of others that you’d doubtless enjoy. Storyline is pretty far-fetched but entertaining and it works pretty well.
Surprised to not see any mention of Definitely, Maybe.
i forgot about that one! it’s great, very very genuinely sweet movie, i really enjoyed it.
Yes I also disagree w/ point #5 my southern honkey cracker polack…
As a dirty foul mouthed spic, saying the word nigga is also relevant to my interests!!

Yo Sarge, how long have you been with your azn?
3 years in December ♥
Backing Bridesmaids so freakin’ hard. Not that big into rom-coms myself (excluding Shaun Of The Dead) but Bridesmaids is seriously super-funny. Kristen Wiig just looks that much hotter to you, when you realise she actually wrote the damn thing. Plus that Irish cop dude is really legit charming and sympathetic.
Except his need to call fucking “fun things”.
Sorry, “fun stuff”.
Hay Sarge Y U no Wedding Singer?
I’ll freely admit that watching pretty white people awkwardly fall in love is the antithesis of my very existence, but a lot of these movies are great on their own merits so I back em hard. If the essence of a Rom-Com is to make you burst out laughing and simultaneously make you sob deeply with heart felt emotion, then I think your admission that “a big part of me is also a 30 year-old white woman” is the perfect summation of that aesthetic. That makes me lol hard and cry harder to see you say that. You still my nigga tho.
admission?? i thought of it more as a brag :(
picturing u working all day at your high-power business man job, coming home to record enpedestalment vocals then curling up on the couch with ur azn with popcorn and tissues to watch rom coms and weep unashamedly. sarge, ur a tr00 renaissance man.
that is a shockingly accurate portrait of my lief (srs). sounds so sad when u put it like that tho :(
forget to add cuddling with ur cat in bed. don’t feel sad- that kind of life sounds good and lovely (srs).
in all honesty it’s pretty much all i have ever wanted and all i could ask for. as soon as i have babies it will be perfect :)
Lol, your life kinda sounds like a beautiful white romantic comedy:
“A rebel in all the wrong places…”
*show clips of old Vegan Reich mosh pits*
“In all the wrong circles..”
*show clips of crusties, edge kids, and Vest metal olds*
“But what he was really looking for…was love…”
*Fade in cute brown girl close up*
a sarge rom com would have an amazing soundtrack.
A+
I liked Role Models but I didn’t think it was a romantic comedy. I’m pretty much just like Paul Rudd’s character, too, I just know how to tone down the “hating sappy cute bullshit” when I have to.
Agree with all of this, I feel like almost any mainstream movie gets a romantic aspect injected into it as a marketing strategy. Therefore almost every comedy would fit the definition of a “romantic” comedy.
My favorite romantic comedy is The Gods Must Be Crazy. Painfully awkward, shy, bookish and clumsy yet highly competent and surprisingly ballsy nerd manages to win over hot Afrikaner chick from smooth talking, superficially confident pseudo-alpha male who turns out to be a gigantic pussy when the shit hits the fan. Literally the one movie that I think could put anyone in a good mood.
Speaking of Paul Rudd, have you ever seen Wet Hot American summer? Movie is hilarious and totally fun
I personally find rom-coms a really mixed bag but LOVE ACTUALLY and NOTTING HILL are total masterpieces. None So British, None So Twee. Hugh Grant is adorbz
are you an appliance?
In b4 Julia Stiles > Katherine Heigl argumentS
But foe trilly doe 10 Things > Julia Roberts career
Role Models easily the most underrated movie out of that whole Apatow comedy with a lesson scene. It’s just nonstop funny.
Kristen Wiig is already my wife so you guys stay away. I <3 her.
that whole Apatow comedy with a lesson scene
boom
have you seen celeste and jesse forever pls respond. i loved it a lot. it’s only showing at the artsy indie place around here so i was hesitant about it but it’s not a faggy indie flick at all. andy samberg and rashida jones are wonderful and it’s such a touching, funny movie. one of my favorites i’ve seen recently. i know i’m gushing but that’s only because i loved it so much. damn.
OMG HOW CAN U NO INCLUDE 500 OF DAYS OF SUM…… in all srsness Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist guise. Mike Cera and Kat Dennings ftw. 500 days of summer paint a pretty good picture of how annoying and assholish indie hipster girls can get, not much a rom com doe. Wood watch mostly anything with Paul Rudd in it (<3 you Paul, wood have your bb's if i have a vagina) bridesmaid is backed tard. Sweet Home Alabama is a pretty solid rom com although it didnt get much love from the critics.
Shit good call– I absolutely love Reese Witherspoon and that actually was a really good movie. Both Legally Blonde movies are pretty good too.
NO MEG RYAN?
NOT ROM-COM
also: sandy bullock.
YES I LOVE HER SO MUCH ♥
it took me a while to warm up to her, but once i did BOOM, madly in heart with her
I am so fgtzy for Meg Ryan that I was genuinely BUMMED when I saw her get nekkid in “In The Cut.” :( feelsbad.svg
Also, IQ is like in my top 10 of all time movies ever.
Wat about The Girl Next Door?
Elisha Cuthbert = Instant Perma-Boner, and Emile Hirsch can be pretty fucking funny. Plus, any story that revolves around an ex-pornstar is awesome/hot/funny by default.
Movie was slightly less believeable than that one where the chick travels back in time or whatever.
favorite rom com ever . . . valley girl. i think it was made before i was born and it’s of a completely different breed than rom coms of today but i will never not love it. cannot tabulate how many hours i’ve spent wishing a barely legal punk rock nick cage wood romance me, take me to shows at seedy west hollywood bars and drunkenly give me the hammer in the bathroom. one day my prince with weird chest hair will come.
Bro, I was about to make a generic comment about how you must rlly like jizz on ur face but then I looked up the coffee shop scene in Role Models and I think I get what you’re getting at with these movies being insightful.
Maybe I should start watching these and start taking life lesson notes. Basically like a tutorial on how not to act, huh?
Bridesmaid is srsly funny and sweet. If you don’t like it ur probz an IMN or something.
Sarge, did you ever see A Walk to Remember. It was that one with Mandy Moore getting cancer and dying in the end. One of her wishes is to be in two places at once, so dude takes her to the state line and has her put one foot in one state and the one in the other one. I thought that was one of the most genius things I’ve ever seen, wood totally do that for a girl
Yes, i LOVE Mandy Moore and that movie. Obviously I didn’t include it here because it is not a comedy but a crushingly sad drama, but that movie is backed hard (and so was Mandy until she married fucking Rayn Adams and revealed herself to be an crazy).
holy shit, mandy moore movies give me so many feels. wood marry macon from how to deal and bear him many fine, thicket-browed sons. actually, come to think of it, him and sarge are brow twins.
Here’s some other SRSLY underrated ROMCOM’s that came out in the past few years.
“What Happens in Vegas” Kutcher and Camron Diaz (infinite hearteyes, DGAF, so hot still) get drunkenly hitched, wake up and hate each other, they breakup just as Kutcher wins $2m at a slot machine. She wants half and the judge forces them to live together for 6 months and make it work.
8/10, supes cute and V funny.
“Love and Other Drugs” Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. He’s a pharma salesman that starts pushing Viagra when it first came out, she’s a quirky/depressed artist who has early-onset parkinson’s. There’s som SRSLY sad parts with her dealing with the disease and the end is like a LEGIT tearjerker (but not like the Notebook tears, like 50% of that.) She’s naked in a ton a scenes which for some reason sorta bums me out in rom-coms.
8/10, good characters and some funny moments mixed with some sad parts.
“Crazy Stupid Love” Gosling, Emma Stone (hnnnngg, would bring her flowers and breakfast in bed), Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, Marissa Tomei (hnnnnnnnnnngggggg but mostly in “My Cousin Vinny “with dat horrible accent). Gosling is a player/lady-killer AKA he plays himself (would) and helps Steve Carrell get his groove back after Moore hooks up with a dude at work (Kevvy Bacon) but then the Gos falls for Emma Stone (would WK forever w/o shame) and then … it’s super funny and cute and romantic.
9.5/10 watch this now with a babe, just shield her eyes when Gosling takes her shirt off or maybz you 2 can both just rub one out during the scene.
“The Sweetest Thing” kinda old, like 2003? but for some reason I JUST saw it. Christina Applegate (hnnnnng, bummed on her mastectomy :”’( R.I.P. ) Carmon Diaz (see previous, hnnnnnnngggg would wife) and Selma Blair (meh) who go on a wacky road-trip to get Xtina’s guy back. I SRSLY think it’s funnier than Bridesmaids like by a BIG margin. I LOL’d so many times and it’s super cute.
8.5/10 Diaz and Applegate need to do more BFF/ROMCOMS and they should probz team up with Kristen Wiig (would hold hands with in public) and Maya Rudolph for Bridesmaids 3 which would probz be the funniest movie ever, next to “Mean Girls” and “Coming To America” of course.
These sound nice, thx for recommendations.
Also, nigga you gay.
I just bought $300 double monk strap shoes today so yeah, yer probz rite :(
LMAO
I am experiencing very mixed emotions right now. This post makes me uncomfortable in a confusing way. Only 2 of your posts have actually bothered me (i got over it): Cody and Keigan’s siq life because they pelt illegal immigrants with rotten eggs, and the luxury cars for obvious reasons. The thing is, with those posts, I was familiar with the butthurt and could treat accordingly. But this isn’t exactly butthurt… I just can’t get how any straight man, ever, would like rom-com’s this much.
Took a breather and coming back, I really like this post because it is starting to help me understand my Dad (srs). He’s a high school teacher with a Civil Engineering degree from MIT who gets bossed around by my Mom and loves these kinds of movies. Like the first 2 paragraphs could have been written by him. Thanks for bringing me closer to some sort of mutual understanding with my Dad in which I do not consider him the filth of ghey/10. (Maybe more like filth of ghey/7?)
OK so regarding the films, Role Models was great, have watched several times and would watch again. Also, would play LAIR with that kid and creep on the cute cosplay girl/10.
Just friends: If you are a fan of the ‘constantly squirming in your seat out of vicarious embarrassment’ school of comedy then you will love this film. see also: meet the parents
I hate these type of movies, but Just Friends wasn’t too unbearable in this regard.
FSM: Jason Segal is a great manchild in that movie, but imo the manchild is much better portrayed by him in “I Love You, Man.” Perfect portrayal imo. Also, I rarely have celebrity crushes, but holy fuck Mila Kunas rips my heart out </3 how does she exist FML
Bridesmaids…. could not avoid hating this film. I wanted so bad to be lukewarm/disinterested in it and not have some excessively strong opinion on it either way, but that fucking main character annoyed me (same thing happened with Sex and the City). I absolutely could not sympathize with her in any way. I think this one hit close to home for me because I had recently for good ended an off and on non relationship with a girl that was almost exactly like that, except diagnosed bi polar and saw a therapist on the regular. She even looked similar but like 10 years younger. Literally all of my female friends who knew said girl and saw Bridesmaids couldn't like it for the exact same reason.
Recommendation I have not seen here yet: High Fidelity. Stars John Cusack, who always makes rom coms more fun/relate able for male viewers imo. Really fun movie imo, and I freaked out when I realized that the record store has Blood for Blood/Victory Records shit in the background (movie came out in like 97?). Also an early Jack Black role that is not a Chris Farley imitation and is a textbook example of an IMN/music snob.
Come to think of it this is one of my favorite movies ever, so I guess I am filth of ghey for liking rom coms too.
<3 u SYWH
HiFi is good and all but it’s like the official hipster/indie RomCom when in reality it’s more about Cussack ‘effing up his life. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen it dozens of times and like it but it’s pretty beta as far as rom-com’s are concerned. Watch Crazy Stupid Love and report back to us plz.
BUT IT HAZ BLOOD FOR BLOOD POSTERS IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!!
Yeah kinda figured it would magnetize the filth of hipster, but w/e. I’m confused regarding your use of the word “beta” in this context. Do you mean that the film is inferior to other rom coms, or that people who watch it are beta (SYWH definition), or the characters in the film itself are betas, or something else?
I will watch that tonight if its on netflix instant que. Otherwise I’ll probably see it sometime over the next ten years when I’m hanging out with someone that’s watching it becuz not 80′s/90′s action flick/anime/porn = not worth torrenting
I used beta ironically ‘cuz it’s lulzy in the context of assigning ROMCOMs on the beta -> alpha scale.
k thx for clarifying
Almost forgot, Get Him to the Greek is a lesser known but very funny (and less heavy) sequel to FSM. One scene in particular hit home, where the main character is trying to convince his wife who is a nurse to go to a show with him, and her response is something like (in a nice tone) “Nope, sorry, that’s not worth being tired all day tomorrow at work for, but if you stay home and watch x ghey movie with me instead I’ll have sex with you.”
= accurate portrayal of relationship with wifeable girl past age 25.
Not to be “that fggt”, but that’s being pretty loose on the “romcom” genre, I thought get him to the Greek was more of a buddy comedy / party comedy with little bits of romance thrown in, very seconday to the obscene sex jokes and groce threesome etc. Funny movie fo sure but I never thought “I’m watching a romantic comedy”. Kinda like the same category as I Love You, Man, which was fucking awesome and also had cute romantic stuff (<3333 U RASHIDA JONES) but its really a buddy comedy
Agreed. Also I’d go 5 rounds with everyone on SYWH including D over a lock of Rashida Jones’ hair.
U know I’ll be bringing brass kuckles and knives to that contest (and a gun bcz none of that would beat Nightshift). Would kill all u fggts for one strand of her arm hair/10
Your observations are acute, but as Nightshift mentioned in a comment above this one, Role Models has very questionable romantic comedy cred as well. Definitely good for the reasons Sarge mentioned, but to be honest “I Love You, Man” seems more romcom to me than Role Models.
Again, the point mentioned is that almost every mainstream movie ever gets a romantic angle forced into it for marketing purposes, so therefore almost every comedy becomes a “romantic” comedy to some extent, thus blurring the line between regular comedy and tr00 ROMCOM.
DEFEND TR00 ROM COMS
I admit to digression though, that last post was just recommending a fun movie, and was specifically off topic
that was me btw haha
Yeah but Role Models is really about him getting his bish back, via not being a miserable dick anymore. He does legit romantic stuff by singing to her in front of all the LARP geeks etc – that’s at the very least, the major sub plot, if not the underlying point of the whole movie (unlikely bros teaching u not 2 b a fggt). Its def a romantic comedy, albeit combined with buddy comedy tropes.
I know what you mean about almost all comedies having “romance” in them, but thats because nobody likes a sausage fest. Also bishes need more convincing to go see a dumb comedy movie so they throw in a faux-romantic sub plot to trick bishes into spending $$$.
Your argument is both valid and sound. I guess I always thought of romcoms as Sleepless in Seattle or Youve Got Mail. Overboard on the stereotypes haha.
And I didn’t mean to imply that I am opposed to romantic subplots, just that they are in fact there for more $. Fine by me, can’t blame them.
Also I realized while reading Sarge’s post that my fate would be the same as his in Role Models as the best case scenario if I don’t start getting shit together now.
This post = so many feels. The Bridesmaids review literally describes me TO A T via the “get your shit together theme”, and teh <3 4 Kristen Wiig/Maya Rudolph. And Role Models is also fantastic, sad no one mentioned Zach And Miri Make A Porno though, that movie was good and lovely. Good to see Crazy Stupid Love, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Love And Other Drugs (Single Tear 4 dat one) are being appreeshiated. Oh and another movie came out earlier this year called Young Adult w/ Charlize Theron, and it was really awkward and depressing, but also motivational and well-done. So glad I'm not the only one who non-ironically loves the rom-com genre 110%.
godhatesfigs,
Did you name yourself that because you actually hate figs? I hate figs too, unless they’re in the context of Fig Newmans.
No, it’s actually based off of a couple references in the bible where Jesus damns fig trees because he was hungry and they weren’t in season to eat. It’s also sort of a play on words/satire of the Westboro Baptist Church slogan “God Hates Fags”. Idk, I just think people using religion to justify stupid shit is goofy. See also: http://www.postkiwi.com/images/2010/11/god-hates-figs.jpg
tfw u find out ur not alone in ur love of romcoms. feelsgoodman.psd
