the term “pop punk” nowadays has taken on too many meanings. if u hang around punx kids theyll say its bands that copy the ramones and sound like screeching weasel (boring 3 chord stuff). if u hang around elitist modern day scene ppl theyll say its liek title fight and man overboard and mayb older bands like lifetime. maybe theres some easycore revivalists hanging around somewhere too.
home grown displaying their kickass vintage pop punk style
anywayz, the point is, back like a decade or so ago, pop punk had one primary meaning. this was in an era where seeing bros with dickie pants and atticus shirts was not uncommon and blink 182 were the supreme rulers of the scene. unfortunately, many other bands became forgotten after the golden era of 1999-2002ish pop punk died and among these bands is HOME GROWN.

long before every top 40 hit was covered by like 10 post-hardcore bands, every once and a while, a punk band would cover a hit pop song, which usually ended up becoming a viral hit on napster

funny youtube comment from the video above, i love how the first genre he mentions is crabcore
back in the golden era of pop punk, being signed to drive-thru records was like the equivelent of a crabcore band signing to rise records now, the pinnacle of their career basically. this was the label that they released their final album on “kings of pop”, in which they also released this kickass song/video….
- home grown? moar like homely grown men! lmfao
- singer kinda resembles tom from blink 182
- the balding asian guitarist is awkwardly out of place and funny
- it seems as if they predicted the emo trend in this (though im not sure how trendy emo already was that point, but im guessing this was 2002)
- props to them for admitting they all still live with their parents at the end
- this video makes me shed a tear for this era of pop punk :(
what are ur fav home grown songs? fav home grown album? what are some other vintage pop punk bands that u enjoy and still listen to?

Oh man this is one of the best bands ever posted on SYWH and seems destined to be a future favorite of mine. Thank you Uppercut.
agreed 100%
dead on with the punx kids and scene elitists. I know ppl on both sides of the spectrum and they’re annoying as fuck. like music made after 80′s doesn’t exist to those former faggots and being a chill bro is untr00 to the latter faggots. both however have too much ground up beach matter in their vagiholes.
Punk covers were the best and there are more than a few top40 songs in the last three years that would make absolutely off the hook covers
brb digging out the Drive-Thru vol 1 DVD from the attic or wherever it is
Loving “You’re Not Alone”. It’s amazing how fast nostalgia can creep up on you…
As far as old pop punk goes, my desire for hearing Fastbacks has been peaking as of late:

imo fitteds are still cool but yeah, fastbacks are definitely the way 2 go in 2012/2013
“Act Your Age” is one of my favorite 90s pop punk records, I still listen to it pretty often– “Nowhere Slow” in particular has stood the test of time really well, both musically and lyrically. I listened to the shit out of that album in like 99-00, definitely brings back memories of some fun (and not so fun) times from back then.
Listening to “Act your Age” on Spotify now, and I’m really digging it. This is one of those bands who’s name I would see all the time for one reason or the other but never took the time to listen to them, and really wish I would have. Based on the time they were active, this would have made a great addition to keg parties on the porch when parents were out of town and you were trying to explain to that cute sophomore why she should take a ride on the golf cart down to the 16th green. Thanks to Uppercut for awaring me to this.
the shape of crabcore to come
Homegrown was another band that I slept on when they were actually around (via being a tr00fag who only ‘real’ [read: old] punk bands), but I can now knowledge that they are great. They fall into that sweet spot of later pop punk just before emo (then shortly after, scene) blew up, forever altering the steez of commercially-leaning pop punk to come (not necessarily for the worse imo).
As far as older pop punk I’ve been jamming to lately, Face To Face has been getting constant play for the last year, as have Strung Out and Blink-182.
if it weren’t for bands like home grown’s innovations towards commercially leaning pop punk, we would probably never get the NEON POP/powerpop 3.0 trend of 2008-2010. so for that i thank them.
ahh yes the end of my neon pop/teckno/elektro dance pop phase of the end of the myspace era…. nothing like crystal castles, benni bennassi, n jeffrey starr to get the bishes all wet =P
allister, fenix tx and slick shoes were my favorites.
based on the comments, the category “bands u may have slept on” seems pretty accurate. confession: i too slept on these guys. this was when i only listened to punk music that was like 95% ultra fast. another great pop punk band from that era that i slept on: relient k.
long before every top 40 hit was covered by like 10 post-hardcore bands
BOOM
Good band, good post. Straight forward, a couple chucking zingers, short and to the point.
would read again

DOPE. bactard
The best pop-punk band from the 1999-2002 era was Staring Back from Santa Barbara (on Lobster Records). The worst band was Slimer, also from Santa Barbara. The father of one of the members of Slimer tried to bribe Fat Mike into putting out their record on Fat, and Fat Mike refused. This is funny because it makes it seem like Fat Mike has standards.
everytime i hear the word “Santa Barbara” i imagine a house in shambles after an epic frat/house party, with a couple bros waking up groggily screaming or howling ” wo0o0 Santa Barbara”. I went to a beachside house party there once… i felt out of place with my jeans, chux, n tee in a sea of beach shorts, tanks, n sandals but soon fell in place as the alcohol flowed n i bro’d down with some chill surfer brah n his friends plus a siq makeout sesh n 2nd/3rd base wiff a kewt brunette guera from the south (dat g.r.i.t.s accent = HUNG)…. college good times… I hate every day i wake up and realize im getting closer to 30 and beyond =/
I’m glad to see the good n lovely SB ( not the grose I.E Es-Bee dats full of poors n desert minorities, & cactus humping bros w/ their ATVs n chit =P ) get mad props for its musical scene cred…
everyone n everything from SB is good n lovely =D
and lol @ mike… cuz he’s fat >=D
No love for Lookout Records?! Dats a shame.
I really wish this band got the recognition they deserved. Kings of pop was one of favorite albums growing up.
QUIT was a great pop punk band from Miami.
