If you like AMERICANEAGLECORE / WHOLESOMECORE, check out I CALL FIVES

American-Eagle-storefront

I’ve always been a big fan of bands like CARTEL, THE STARTING LINE, and MAYDAY PARADE, but I struggle when it comes time to place them in a genre (and as you all know, accurately categorizing bands is the most important part of being a music fan). It never feels right when people call them pop-punk because, well, there’s nothing punk about them. I’m not like upset about that or anything, I just can’t imagine any of them going through a phase where they wore a homemade GG ALLIN shirt to school.

I’ve been pretty into this band I CALL FIVES lately, and especially this video. As much as I like fucked up, misanthropic shit like NO ZODIAC or whatever, I love retreating into the safety of WHOLESOMECORE. This video is a cute little story about how the singer has a crush on some 6.5/10 and they go camping and get in a fight and then make up or something. IDK, the details don’t really matter as much as how it could definitely be playing on the TVs in the back of an American Eagle store, and for a minute it makes me feel like I am a middle-class teenager who shops at the mall instead of a fucked up, burned out old hardcore dude.

Could use more braying donkey vocals, acoustic bonus tracks, and lyrics about the difficulties of being a young adult and struggling to find happiness, but still backed.

  2. Alex says:

    Wholesomecore also known as musicmadebypeoplewhowillneverreadstuffyouwillhatebecausetheirlifeneverwenthatfarofftrackcore.

  3. a guy says:

man that chick is way higher than 6.5

  4. Suchjosh says:

I always refer to this stuff as “aggressive pop”. This shit is jammin hard and they seem super into it. Will DL for sure.

  5. this guy has the comments says:

This is really good. Reminds me of Ten Second Epic but I have no idea if they are even a thing in places that aren’t Canada.

Inb4 “Wholesomecore” is used in an Itunes review.

  7. nu♘♘tej says:

Caution: Camera using film, inclusion of Polaroid-camera, art-paint-raeg + camping hints at incubating trooness. Follow-up album will most likely be acoustic-CoalminerSelvedgeBarbershopChiefJoseph-Core.

that girl is a straight up “wood snuggle under a blanket in our onesies while watching disney films”/10

  9. Nils says:

Good song, but they should have put a small breakdown around 2.15

That girl looks like a “white” Jess Bowen.

  13. smashcan says:

Right after they shot this video the lead singer had to go back to work since he’s the shift superviser at Zumiez.

  14. Pat says:

saw them live at a show with 30 people last month, guy in bane shirt annoyed the shit outta the 7′s that were at the show by almost moshing into them and then stage dived onto the 10 people meaningfully singing the lyrics, including me.

  15. 420toxi cholocaust666 says:

I feel like they’re playing the riff from that one 4th n Goal song backwards. Nothin wrong really, just curious if other people hear it lol

  16. venezuelandude says:

frontman needs to acquire aestheticssssss. then this might get somewhere. p cool song

  17. uppercut613 says:

NO DUMB HAIR STYLES, NO NEON CLOTHES = NO UPPERCUT613

  18. RAP GAME HERMAN CAIN says:

I saw The Starting Line and The Wonder Years and the shift from weirdo tr00 pop punk kids to cute 6.5 blondes and normalbros was amazing.

  19. Penzo says:

Willing to bet multiple members of this band upload pictures of their drinks to instagram

Srsly tho, why do you SYWH bros idolise plain looking dudes like the ones in this band? i bet they’re as dull and boring as the music they make irl

    Needs more neutrally coloured clothing.

    • TLDR says:

Seeing as I come from a mild to moderately fucked up background (alcoholism and family dysfunction taking place in the suburban setting, as opposed to the tr00 poor/urban one), I think I am qualified to answer this question, via exposure to such people as this band exhibits.

You see, poors/total fuckups always envied these type of people FOR their boring lives. For example, in other posts Sarge literally states a “boring suburban Dad” as his goal in life. This is because it looks stable and aesthetically appealing from the point of view of someone immersed in the chaos and humiliation of poverty. What they’re really envying isn’t so much what DOES happen, as what does NOT happen. Their underlying mentality isn’t so much “gee, these boring, generic dudes are doing sweet stuff” as “I bet these guys never had to deal with all the ridiculous, depressing, embarrassing shit I did.”

You are, for the record, totally correct. While these particular specimens have made some catchy fucking music, the majority of their ilk are extremely uninteresting and weirdos like us have virtually no way of relating to them for the most part.

  20. thebirthdayskeleton says:

My cousin is really into this band. I seem to remember hearing their Christmas song and thinking ‘I could get into this’, then forgetting their name. Thanks for reminding me, Sarge!

  21. TLDR says:

I really like this band, along with Cartel and the Starting Line. Reminds me of fun times at Warped Tour with temporary success blending in with normals from work.

Thanks for this sweet post! I love how even posts about normal, mainstream bands end up depressing <3<3<3 SYWH

sorry dude, i can’t help it :( wish i could but yeah.

      • TLDR says:

No need for apology, I seriously like it that way. In general I just love honesty, and in virtually all cases it commands my respect. SYWH is literally one of the most honest things I’ve ever found in life (100% srs)

Just when I think SYWH is bullshitting itself to avoid some uncomfortable issue or be fun or whatever, BAM I’m wrong because someone comes out with the hard truth in a simple ingenious way and the majority agrees. It’s not just you either its all the other regular commenters

        Thanks <3

  23. Bronson says:

Sweet band! I saw them at Warped Tour last year with about 15 other kids at some tiny stage. They played a fun set, and it was lulzy watching their neckbeard merch guy bamboozle teenagers into buying their cd. tbh, wasn’t all that blown away by the album, but definitely a fun, well adjusted alternative to the cryfest that is most things pop punk-related atm.

  24. alex says:

Its fun to watch this in one window and have boston beatdown playing in another for some ultimate contrast.
