it saddened me when disneypunk veterans ALLSTAR WEEKEND announced their indefinite hiatus earlier this year. meanwhile, FTSK have been trying to regain the relevance they once had in 2008 amongst the teen-girl demographic by marketing their tour in a clever way to make it seem like they’re touring with one direction. metro station im not even sure if they were a band anymore til i looked on their wikipedia page and the only member listed in it now is the chubby singer/guitarist.
POINT IS… the disneypunk genre has come to a turning point. a new band must come out of the woodwork and supply the demand for young bitchez who crave something a little bit more underground than one direction and justin bieber, but who arent hardcore enough to listen to risecore.
after narrowing my choices down to a few bands (including the after party & before you exit) ive concluded that HOLLYWOOD ENDING will be the next big disneypunk band.
i swear, disneypunk bands are like among the BEST dressed of any bands.. everytime i see pics of bands like hollywood ending im like.. why arent i wearing that right now?
their standard friendzone song. features amazing lyrics like “so tell me why do you have that boyfriend… maybe i should learn to make you cry”
their hit single off their EP “always 18″ (and also my fav song by them) features them dressed up as superheroes fighting sketchy looking old dudes who look like they play in hardcore bands. an invisible rapper even comes in and lays down a sick verse.
this song is about how the singer has a crush on an “alternative” girl from his school and how shes so edgy and different
bands like this are usually mostly known for their justin bieber covers, and hollywood ending’s rendition of “beauty and a beat” is one of the best takes on a biebz song i think ive ever heard. i like how at 1:14 the ginger guitarist briefly displays his sick shredding skills.

one guitarist (ginger) is kinda like the ‘lead’ guitarist, doing solos and whatnot, and the other guitarist sings and plays guitar… the blonde hair bassist was british, so he had that international appeal.. but he left the band to be closer to his family in england :(

Question-would these guys be more popular if they ditched the whole “band” thing and all just became singers? It doesn’t seem unlikely that for a band like this, none of the instrument dudes actually performed on any of their songs.
Would they be more marketable that way? I feel like that they would have been put in that position if they were better off that way.
I am sure their brand manager commissioned substantial market research to answer this question. Establishing the right foundation for their brand position from day 1 is critical.
I’d guess that just a bunch of singers would be more marketable, but thinking about it a bit more, there isn’t really any “real band” that’s big right now ever since everybody stopped caring about the Jonas Brothers, and these guys seem like they could fill the pretty boy power pop mold quite well.

I like that the 16 year old Disneypunk kid wearing the Rockos Modern Life shirt is a nice play on hardcore Kids These Days jocking weird old 90′s bands who’s career life spans came and went before they were even born, as discussed in the recent podcast.

Did anybody ever listen to No Hollywood Ending? They were pretty cool when I was 14, but in hindsight I think they were just some local band from Jersey
